Canterbury Ice Hockey Club

Canterbury Ice Hockey Club Established in 1971, the Canterbury Ice Hockey Club is the largest ice hockey club in Australia.

Canterbury Ice Hockey Club (CIHC) is the largest ice hockey club in Australia with 13 teams competing in the New South Wales Ice Hockey Association competition. These teams range from Atoms (under 11 years of age) right through to all Senior grades, catering for both male and female players. CIHC also provides training and competition opportunities for our youngest budding hockey players through o

ur Mites program (under 8). The Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink was completed and opened its doors for business in 1971. The building and operation of the rink was made possible through the dedicated fundraising and hard work of a cooperative board whose primary objective was to provide a training and competition venue for figure skaters, however ice hockey players were also invited to use this new facility. Following the completion of the rink in 1971 Canterbury Bankstown Ice Hockey Club (formed in 1969) was successful in its application to play at this exciting new facility. The opening year of the rink saw the formation of United International Ice Hockey Club, who also called the Canterbury rink home. The admission of United International to the competition brought the total number of teams playing out of the Canterbury rink to three, as Glebe Winfield Lions had also relocated there in the rink’s inaugural year. Prior to 1971 there is evidence linking one of the inaugural teams playing out of Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink to the Glebe Ice Hockey Club, a team that played in the fast growing NSW ice hockey competition in the 1920s. In 1981 a decision was made by the New South Wales Ice Hockey Association that only one club would be allowed at each ice rink. The main reason for this decision was to more closely involve the various rinks’ management in the future viability of their resident hockey clubs, by providing both financial and administrative support. This decision saw the merger of the three Canterbury home clubs into one club, Canterbury United Ice Hockey Club. In 1986 the club name was changed to Canterbury Eagles Ice Hockey Club, with the association becoming incorporated in 1990. In 2015 members voted to change the club name to Canterbury Ice Hockey Club. This change was made to accommodate the fact that we had eight different name teams playing under the “Canterbury” name, and it was both confusing and inaccurate for them to appear as subservient to the "Eagles" part of our club name. Usually the first team in each Junior grade plays as “Eagles” with subsequent teams having a choice of seven alternative team names now all proudly under the common "Canterbury Ice Hockey Club" brand, as reflected in our club banner.

Things are definitely "rising" and not just hopes and dreams!

The new COIR Facade, Roof, Grandstand, Storage Areas, Large Change Rooms with Facilities, Lifts, Balcony and Multipurpose Upstairs Spaces are definitely well along with forethought in the way the slab was laid for the new rink utilising Tech and a Plant Rooms, Under Floor Trenching, Oversized Ice Pit and Zamboni Workshop to ensure a Fully Functional Centre of Ice Sports. 👏
