This past weekend, the Griffs traveled to Sydney for the final installment of the Winter SLL, soaking up some coastal sunshine and enjoying a run on the fancy turf fields at UNSW. Both our teams were missing some key players away on vacation, but we were keen to get to the big city anyway for some exciting rounds of lacrosse.

The lads met the USYD Dragons again and had yet another devastatingly close within-a-point match. Nathan Tzanlis kicked off each quarter, refusing to give up any of the face-offs. Kris Mogford once again led the way with 3 goals, just ahead of a borrowed Jack Stokes with 2 goals. With 3 assists, Jack Reid was the offensive mastermind, and he made sure to put away one of his own as well. We're very proud of Oli Taylor for scoring his first goal in a Sixes match (but we've lost count of how many UniLax goals he's scored).

The Canberra women had a great fight against the UNSW Lions, with our tireless captain Emily Harwood putting away two goals right after playing the men's match. Katie Duffy was yet again a crucial all-rounder, scoring a goal, providing an assist, and being a defensive menace. The Griffins were absolutely delighted to break Vic Edwards-Spencer out of retirement and get her back on the field playing her favourite game. It was impossible to tell that she'd had a nearly 20-year break from lacrosse - Vic kept pace with the UNSW juniors and was completely unphased by the fast pace and heavy contact characteristic of Sixes. The final score was 3-12, but the Lions fired off a lot more than 12 shots. Thankfully, keeper Faith Meckley had an outstanding performance in the cage, making the Lions fight for each of their goals.

Keen beans Jordon Moloney and Faith went on to play in the women's gold medal match, adding their might to the UNSW Lions and USYD Dragons, respectively.

And so closes an exciting chapter in Canberra Lacrosse Club's history - our first participation in a regular league! The Griffs are eager to keep the momentum rolling and give it our all for the two big events left on the season's calendar - Battle in the Capital and East Coast Cup.

Tomorrow is the exciting conclusion of our UniLax league!

The Waterdogs have the slightest edge on the Whipsnakes that they will have to fight hard to keep in place if they want to remain the top dogs. The Outlaws are in third, but objects in the rearview mirror are closer than they appear...

The exciting final conclusion of the Winter SLL is this weekend, and the Griffs are chomping at the bit to get up to Sydney.

Here's a (slightly late) recap from our last SLL showdown on August 23rd. Thanks to Leighton for snapping a show-stopping album! The USYD Sea Dragons travelled to Canberra to find the capital bathed in sunshine and the Griffins stoked to meet them.

The Canberra women were proud to field a full team of 12, including Diamantina "DD" Dowell, Andrea Foot, and Shihyon Seo for their debut club games. The team had a slow start to the first game as they found their rhythm. USYD's small but mighty goalkeeper, Shio Saito, was absolutely unstoppable, shutting out the Griffs entirely through the first quarter.

The Canberra men had two nail-biter games that both ended in devastatingly close 4-5 losses. Kris Mogford and Andy Campbell led the way on the scoresheet, and the club was delighted to welcome back our young gun Oliver Taylor after a long hiatus from Sixes. Emily Harwood once again put on a helmet and entered the fray, and made her way onto the stat sheet with an assist and an overall impressive offensive performance. Ash Jefferson stopped some hard shots in the first game while James Wong subbed in for USYD, and then they swapped for game 2. Jack Reid had a killer day on defense, generating a few turnovers. Thankfully, after soaking an impressive hit near the end of the second game, his concussion tests came back all clear!

The Canberra women came back roaring for their second game, giving USYD something to write home about. The scores were quite close through the first three quarters, with USYD finally able to put in a gap in the 4th, but not without a huge fight from the Griffins. Thea Holt-Smith and Katie Duffy led the way on the scoresheet, with goal scoring spread across 6 players, including debutants Shihyon and Andrea. Our youngest player Sarai Schmidt was a star in the face-offs. Ice hockey juggernauts Jordan and DD created a powerful defense with Meghann and Sam, and our keeper Faith was on fire, providing a solid backstop when all else failed. The sideline was thoroughly entertained with this fierce 12-16 game.

On Sunday August 9, the Canberra Griffins welcomed the UNSW Lions Lacrosse onto our own turf. We made sure to order up some proper lacrosse weather for the occasion - steady rain and chilly winter temperatures.

We were delighted to debut some new faces for their very first games of Sixes: Jordan Moloney and Alex Butler. We couldn't be prouder of the two of them, with Jordan flexing her defensive strength and Alex getting right into the thick of it and showing his ability to carry the ball under heavy pressure.

Big ups as well to Emily Harwood, who "debuted" for the men's team in the second match-up, and to Ash Jefferson for switching things up and stepping into goals.

We did not manage to secure a win, but as always, we are very proud of everyone and absolutely delighted to see the continued growth and development of our players and the club as a whole.

We've got company this weekend!!! Can you hear that distant roar? 👂UNSW Lions Lacrosse are on their way from Sydney! 🦁

This Sunday will see a mega Lions v. Griffins showdown at the University of Canberra Oval 2, kicking off with the first women's game at 1pm.

A couple of weeks back, our Canberra women secured a close, one-point victory over the UNSW women. We know they'll be fired up for a rematch, so we've been training hard to make sure we're ready for the heat!

The Canberra and UNSW men have yet to meet each other, but after going down to Macquarie twice at Centennial Park, our boys are looking forward to another opportunity to show the league what they're made of.

After the day is done, all are welcome to join us at the Caribou from 6:30pm for drinks, good Canadian tucker, and some spirited banter 🍁

The Griffins would like to extend our thanks to Lacrosse NSW for inviting us to join the Winter SLL and hosting us on Sunday. Everyone had a great time!

Our women's team came away with one win v. UNSW and one loss v. USYD. Our men's team went down twice to Macquarie. The second game was devastatingly close, with Macquarie barely wrestling it free from the Griffins in golden goal overtime.

As we only had 5 women able to attend, UNSW kindly lent us some of their spry juniors in our match against USYD. We were delighted to work with Maddy, Jess, Indy, and Ariel, and we'd especially like to give big ups to Ariel, a young field player giving sixes her very first go! 11 goals were shared between 5 players, and the whole team got around the ball, with lots of great hustle to capture loose ground balls.

The lads also shared the love in their first match, with 6 goals spread across 5 players. We were stoked to see young George hit the back of the net, and big ups to our seasoned regular Brad for leading with two goals.

Our win against UNSW was a huge effort, as the women's team fielded exactly 6 players. Yep, you read that right, no subs! The team played to their strengths - and Thea's strength is run fast and shoot with deadly accuracy. She left everything on the field and carried us to glory, scoring 8 goals, as well as assisting Tash with 2 of her 4 goals. In addition to blocking lots of crucial shots, our keeper Faith's long clears resulted in 2 assists. Sam and Sarai were critical carriers, and Meghann was a reliable defensive backstop.

The boys came back fired up for round two, resulting in a 5-5 tie at overtime. Jack, James Dawson, and JD made themselves known on the scoresheet. James Wong's unshakeable keeping was critical in the 4th quarter. He faced down and stopped many breakaway 1-on-1s, leaving the Macquarie offensive frustrated. Macquarie had the first attempt in golden goal OT, but again, Wong locked down the cage. Our newest member, Kris, made an incredible run for the winning goal but was foiled by a tricky defender in the final seconds. Macquarie came back on the turnover and finally managed to slip one past Wong to secure the thrilling match.

This past Monday saw an action-packed opening night of UniLax league with our finalised teams.

Named after PLL franchises, we have the Outlaws 🤠 the Whipsnakes 🐍 and the Waterdogs 🐶

All the teams were well-matched; they played fast, exciting games of 5v5 that were quite even in score right up until the final minutes.

The Whipsnakes, led by Captain George and underscored by a strong performance from keeper Meghann, came out as the dominate team of the first night, defeating both of their opponents. But with seven more nights of match-ups to go, it could be anyone's tournament!

If you weren't able to make it the first night, but you're still keen to join in - come on down for week 2 and you'll be assigned to a team.

The Griffs are excited to travel to Sydney this weekend for our first installment of the Winter SLL!

All four SLL clubs will be out on the green at Reservoir Fields in Centennial Park this Sunday. The Canberra women will have one match each against the USYD Sea Dragons and the UNSW Lions. The Canberra men will have two opportunities to teach the North Sydney team how to play some lacrosse 😜

Good luck to all players and teams, and thank you for the tireless volunteers who work behind the scenes to make these events a success.
