JUDO AUSTRALIA TOOK ADVANTAGE of the 2026 National Championships to present awards to two very important leaders in judo - Victoria's Janet Lambert and Lubomir Petr from New South Wales.

Both were honoured at the 2025 AGM, Janet as one of two new life members, and Lubo as one of five recipients of the newly inaugurated Service Award.

JA's General Manager - Participation, Gareth Watkins, made the presentation to Janet Lambert (Yarsley) who started the Endeavour Hills Judo Club in 1973 and still serves as head coach. Janet has been an athlete, Judo Victoria stalwart, and a key long time ally of the Kodokan - she was one of the first women ever invited to train in the main dojo, and would go on to become a renowned exponent and teacher of Kata.

Judo Australia chairman, Simon Read, presented a Service Award to New South Wales, Australian and international referee, Lubomir Petr.

Receiving one of five Service Awards inaugurated at last year's Judo Australia AGM, Lubo was honoured not simply for his service as a referee, but his role in upskilling and developing the Australian and Oceania referee corps.

Awards will be forwarded to a number of other people honoured at the AGM, but unable to collect in person.

The second Life Member invested at the 2025 board meeting was the Northern Territory's John Bradley. He was not able to attend Nationals and will receive his latest trophy hand delivered by the NT delegation.

Trophies will also mark the contributions of four other 2025 Service Awards recipients: Peter Alway from Victoria, Arek Zygmunt and Zel Goldman from Queensland, and the late Rodney Cox of Victoria.
