Mount Ainslie parkrun event number #379

Winter certainly made its presence felt for Event 379, with a chilly Canberra morning accompanied by light rain greeting everyone as they arrived.

Despite the less-than-inviting conditions, the Mount Ainslie community once again proved that a little weather is no match for a Saturday morning parkrun.

As participants gathered beneath grey skies, there was the familiar mix of anticipation, conversation and encouragement that makes parkrun such a special part of the weekend.

The trails were damp, full of puddles, the air was crisp, and before long walkers, joggers and runners were making their way through the bushland that surrounds our course.

We were delighted to welcome visitors from near and far this week, including guests from Melbourne, Hobart, Jervis Bay and Brisbane. Whether Mount Ainslie was your planned destination or a stop during your travels, thank you for choosing to spend your Saturday morning with us.

A particularly warm welcome goes to the many people who completed their very first parkrun. Every parkrunner remembers their first event, and we hope your experience on our trails was the beginning of a long and enjoyable parkrun journey.

Milestones are always worth celebrating, and this week we recognised one participant who reached the impressive 100 parkrun mark.

Achievements like these are built on consistency, commitment and countless kilometres shared with the parkrun community.

Congratulations on reaching this fantastic milestone!!!

Of course, none of this happens without the generosity of our volunteers. While participants receive the times and results, it is the volunteers who make the event possible each week.

A sincere thank you to Run Director Giles Lamb and the outstanding team who braved the conditions to deliver another successful event:

Giles Lamb – Event Director and First Timers Welcome

Liam Camilleri – Pre-event Setup, Event Day Course Check and Communications Person

Julian Borys – Timekeeper

Rebecca Borys – Finish Tokens

Sam Flynn, Louise Houlahan, Natasia Pulford and Gavin Evans – Barcode Scanning

Susie Ballentyne – Marshal

Nic Thomas – Photographer and Report Writer

Samantha Isbell – Tail Walker

Sandeep Chandra – Volunteer Coordinator

Cameron Curry – parkwalker

Whether it was arriving early to prepare the course, cheering participants along the route, recording times, scanning barcodes or ensuring everyone completed the course safely, every volunteer played an important role in making the morning a success.

As we packed away equipment and headed off for a well-earned coffee, there was a shared sense of satisfaction that comes from another great community gathering. Rain or shine, Mount Ainslie continues to bring people together through movement, friendship and the simple joy of starting the weekend outdoors.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Event 379. We look forward to doing it all again next Saturday.

Good morning parkrunners. 👋

As you would expect there are a few puddles on course, but the trails remain firm underfoot.

Setup and course check are complete and we are good to go. ✅

If you’re driving please follow the advice pinned to the top of our page and park at Campbell High or the AWM.

As always, watch your footing, share the path, listen quietly to the Run Director’s briefing, have fun. 🧡

See you soon. 😀

Are you ready? Ready for our Event 378 wrap up. Okay, let's go…

We are very spoilt in Canberra, including our good mates just across the border, we have 12 parkruns to choose from. All of them offer something unique.

Here at Mount Ainslie, we are home to some excellent views. It's true that our course doesn't reach the summit, but if you are willing and able to go up for a look pre or post your parkrun you will usually be rewarded with outstanding views over the city. Today was an excellent example of that, as you can see in the image below, captured by your correspondent during a pre-parkrun warmup.

Specific to our parkrun course, it's an all-trail affair, lined with eucalypts and shared with our wildlife friends. This morning the kookaburras were laughing loudly and a mob of 15 or so kangaroos leapt across the course moments before we set off.

All this just a touch over 2km from the CBD. We are very spoilt in Canberra. ❤

In addition to nature's beauty we welcomed 240 beautiful parkrunners — walkers, run/walkers, pram pushers, doggo wranglers, joggers, runners and outright speed demons. All of you bringing something unique every Saturday. Thank you!

Today's tally included 40 folks who experienced our course for the first time, including 8 first time ever parkrunners. Tourists called in from Queanbeyan, Sydney, Melbourne and WA. International representation came to us via Tonga and New Zealand. Welcome one and all.

Congrats to Lauren and Kate for reaching your 25 parkrun milestones. The first of many more we trust.

A nod of acknowledgement as well to Regan, who volunteered for the first time. He was our Timekeeper, a great role for a first timer! It's a task that scares many, but thanks to the very user friendly app it's not as nerve-wracking as you might think. And our Tail Walker, Helen, reached her 100 parkrun milestone (54 of those with us). Well done to you both, and thank you.

Thanks to Run Director, Arthur, for his guidance. He led this merry team of helpers:

Kate — Setup/Course check
Alasdair — Setup helper
Regan — Timekeeper
Angela — Finish Tokens
Denise, Sam, Sonia, Trish — Barcode Scanning
Nick — Marshal
Abby, Isabella — parkwalkers
Helen — Tail Walker
Sandeep, Liam — Back of house helpers

As you know, we cannot bring you this event without the help of volunteers. We'd love to show you the ropes, or benefit from your experience, and see you in a vollie vest one day. Follow the link below to our Future Roster and see if there's a role waiting to have your name added to it.

That's pretty much it. Another excellent parkrun morning. Thank you everyone. You know where to find us next week!

There’s a bit of fog this morning, but our course is looking great! There is a puddle right before the turnaround point, so you might get your feet wet.

First timer briefing is 7.53 and main briefing is straight after.

See you soon!

Strap yourselves in, here's our wrap for Event #377…

Brrr, after a mild autumn, our first winter event for 2026 was a fffffoggy and brisk one. It will get colder, no doubt, but today was a day for gloves and long sleeves!

When it's a fresh morning like this it's always good to consider and appreciate our volunteers. Especially those at the finish line who don't have the luxury of 5km to warm them up. Although, a shout out to Sam who ran first, barcode scanned second, and scored himself a course PB along the way. Nice one!

Congrats Kirsten, to one of our locals, for reaching her 100 milestone (44 at Mount Ainslie). And, according to the results, there were no other milestones recorded today, so Kirsten gets all the glory to herself. Bravo!

For Canberra's second long-weekend in a row our numbers dropped off compared to recent weeks, but there were still 201 finishes. That's a great result. It doesn't see like that long ago that a field of 200+ was a rare occurrence.

We welcomed visitors from warmer climes such as Northern Rivers, Mooloolaba, Newcastle, Adelaide, Kiribati and England (it's true, they're having a heat wave at the moment). Oh, and at least one tourist Melbourne!

Today's event was brought to you by the following super folks who donned vollie vests:

Giles — Course Setup/Check and Run Director
Thomas — Timekeeper
Ada — Finish Tokens
Holly, Pip, Sam F, Sam H — Barcode Scanning
Olivia — Marshal
Jen — Photographer
Josie — parkwalker
Zoe — Tail Walker
Alasdair, Arthur, Robbie — Equipment wranglers
Liam, Sandeep — Back of house

Some quick numbers to finish with: 16 volunteers, 201 finishes, 33 first timers, 23 PBs, 99 men, 80 women, 22 unknowns. We love you all and thank you for playing your part in another successful Mount Ainslie parkrun.

We'll be here again next Saturday, can't wait! 🧡
