Fairbairn Golf Club

Fairbairn Golf Club 2025 Country Club of the Year

Fairbairn Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 70 course with tree-lined fairways and grass greens.

Our clubhouse features a licensed bar, café and BBQ area, making it the perfect place for social golf, competitions and events. Fairbairn Golf Club is situated on the Fairbairn precinct, located at the north-east corner of the Canberra International Airport. Access is via Glenora Drive, off Pialligo Avenue (the road to Queanbeyan). It is a full 18 hole par 70 course with well maintained grass gree

ns and fairways defined by established pine trees. There are bunkers, mounds and water hazards to add to the golfing challenge, but the rough is kept manageable to minimise frustration and add to the enjoyment of your round. In 1953 a six hole course with sand greens was built on a vacant area of RAAF Base Fairbairn by a group of volunteer serving personnel. By 1965 the course had expanded to nine holes with grass greens - the turf coming from the old Royal Canberra Golf Club when it was forced to relocate owing to the filling of Lake Burley Griffin. At that time the club was known as RAAF Golf Club Fairbairn, with membership and indeed access largely restricted to serving personnel. In 1998 the name of the club was changed to the ADF Golf Club and in a sign of the times the Department of Defence made it clear that historical subsidies in the form of things like 'free' electricity and water, cleaning, waste disposal etc.could not continue indefinitely and the club would need to become self-supporting. This process of sometimes painful transition commenced in the late 1990s, led to the registration of 'Fairbairn Golf Club incorporated' in 2004 and culminated in 2010 when a formal lease (The Defence Licence) was negotiated, giving the club security of tenure for an initial period of seven years in return for an annual rent.

The Fairbairn Golf Club is up for divestment by the Government. This club has been around since 1953 providing sporting facilities in Canberra initially for the benefit of Defence personal and since the late 1990s to the public. There is no cost to Defence of running this facility and the community health and social benefits are important. There are insufficient golf courses in the ACT now for the demand and closing the Fairbairn golf course will have a significant impact on community access to golf courses. The significant beneficial impacts of golf to the local community can be seen here.

The golf club supports charity events, social clubs, corporate days, kids golf, women's beginners golf, members comps, and significant numbers of social players. In the past we have welcomed the Australian Masters Games, the ADF national champs, the PGA Legends tour, US Kids Golf, the Jack Newton Foundation, Emerge & See and Pegasus Riding for the Disabled charities to name some of the outside organisations using this facility. The ACT region benefits from all of these, and your help is requested to ensure that this community facility remains available for all members and visitors.

We are seeking to have the Fairbairn Golf Club retained and available to the community for the future. The Club seeks your help in raising the public's concern for the loss of a great facility. We are encouraging people to express their support through signing a petition to the Minister for Finance, Senator Katy Gallagher, who is responsible for the decision on the future of the property.

Saving our golf course is not just about the ACT but about the wider issue of retaining sport facilities for the community and providing health and economic benefits to the wider community in any location. Keeping this valuable community asset available to the public is important to us and should be so across the wider community.

More information available on our website (https://www.fairbairngolfclub.com.au/save-fgc.php).

Thank you.
