Recreational Aviation Australia

Recreational Aviation Australia We Inspire and Connect People through Aviation.

Formerly known as the Australian Ultralight Federation, Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) is the peak body in Australia responsible for administering ultralight, recreational and LSA (Light Sport Aircraft) operations. We train and certify pilots, flying instructors and maintainers, register a fleet of almost 3,500 aircraft, and oversee the operations of over 150 flight training schools throu

ghout the country. Our organisation is also responsible for the development and promotion of flying safety standards, and for advocating on behalf of our 10,000 members. We are one of nine RAAOs (Recreational Aviation Administration Organisations) authorised to self-administer sport and recreational flying activities on behalf of the Commonwealth Government’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Since the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988 were never intended to regulate this class of aircraft or activities, RAAOs are permitted to operate via exemptions and delegations. Collectively, RAAOs account for almost half of all the aircraft operating in Australia

RAAus continues to experience sustained growth, and has been successful in securing enhanced operating privileges for its members. Our not-for-profit company is governed by an elected Board of volunteer Directors, supported by a small full-time management team who are committed to helping you realise your dream of safe, affordable flying.

✈️ CROOKWELL AERO CLUB IS BACK! ✈️

After many years, the Crookwell Aero Club has been reformed in 2026 — bringing together pilots, aviation enthusiasts and our local community once again.

And what better way to kick things off than with a Fly-In BBQ at Crookwell Aerodrome!

Whether you’re flying in or driving in — we’d love to see you there.

Our first get-together is all about good company, a few aircraft on the ground, a BBQ sizzling away and getting the aviation community back together in Crookwell.

Follow the Crookwell Aero Club page for event updates, flying information and everything happening at the club.

We’re looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces — and plenty of new ones. ✈️

THE JOY OF FLYING! WHERE HAS FLYING TAKEN YOU LATELY?

There’s something pretty special about seeing the world from above, and flying over the beautiful canola fields around Temora is a perfect example of just how enjoyable recreational aviation can be.
With the bright yellow paddocks stretching out below, it’s a great reminder of the freedom, adventure and simple fun that comes with getting airborne.
One of the best things about recreational aviation is that no two flights are ever quite the same. Whether it’s a short local flight, exploring somewhere new, flying with friends or simply taking in the view, every flight creates another memory and another reason to love being in the air.
It’s also the people, friendships and shared passion for aviation that make our community so special.
Beautiful scenery, great company and the freedom of flight, sometimes the best afternoons are the ones spent in the air. 💛

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: FLYING THE TECNAM P-MENTOR
FULL ARTICLE HERE: https://raaus.com.au/news/flying-the-tecnam-p-mentor/
RAAus Head of Flight Operations Marty Peters recently flew Tecnam P-Mentor VH-ABJ from Cessnock Airport, spending 1.4 hours getting acquainted with this modern, purpose-built trainer.
The aircraft combines a comfortable cockpit, excellent visibility and logically arranged controls with modern technology including ADS-B In and Out, autopilot, a yaw damper, a Rotax 912 iS engine and a constant-speed propeller. In the air, its standout quality was stability. Developed as an IFR-capable training platform, the P-Mentor offers settled handling and precise responses—although RAAus operations remain VFR. With a maximum take-off weight of 720 kg, it falls within the Group G weight range and demonstrates the broader variety of aircraft Group G can make accessible to RAAus members.
Marty’s key takeaway is that familiarity with a manufacturer or aircraft family is no substitute for proper preparation, type familiarisation and an understanding of the aircraft’s systems, limitations and performance.

ONE WEEK TO GO

Wings begins Friday 11 September with Welcome to Wings, a relaxed pre-flight evening at the historic Hotel Corones.

Saturday’s Aerial Display & Aviation Careers Expo brings warbirds, classic aircraft, flyovers, pilot meet-and-greets, career opportunities, the RFDS Flight Simulator, adventure and joy flights, classic cars and family entertainment to Charleville Airport.

Saturday night continues at the Charleville RSL with Bombs Away! Wings After Dark, a 1940s-inspired Aviation Trivia Night, before Sunday’s Drone Camp gives children aged seven and over the chance to code and pilot drones.

The weekend also coincides with Charleville’s National Bilby Day celebrations.

General admission to Saturday’s Air Display & Aviation Careers Expo is just $12 per person, with children under five free.

Cr Radnedge said with only one week remaining, the invitation was simple.

“Come west, stand on the tarmac, meet the pilots and see these aircraft where they belong, in the skies above a town that has been connected to Australian aviation for more than a century.

“Wings is deliberately a more intimate aviation experience, and that is what will make the weekend so special.”
