The Australian ute was one of the greatest stupidly practical inventions this country ever made. Someone basically looked at a Falcon or Commodore and said: “what if we made this thing able to haul washing machines AND do burnouts?”
And honestly, nothing has ever captured Australian culture better. You could fit a V8 in it, throw a couch in the tray, carry hard rubbish, transport a fridge, sink 14 Dare iced coffees on the way to Bunnings, then still lose your licence doing a skid outside Hungry Jack’s.
The saddest part is younger Australians probably don’t realise how uniquely Aussie these things were.
The rest of the world got giant American pickups. We got Falcons and Commodores with trays welded onto the back and absolutely no weight over the rear tyres.
Which is why every Aussie bloke over 35 still talks about AU Falcon utes like they were a sacred gift from the gods of Centrelink and burnout competitions.
