Welcome back - Michael, Tania and Sean. They’ve just returned to Cairns from a quick trip to Bali for an impromptu holiday and to play in the Bali International Underwater Hockey comp 2026. Lots of fun and good hockey with friends and new opponents.

With school holidays starting tomorrow, the next two weeks with have a slightly different feel:

Mondays - same as usual, 6pm competition games

Wednesdays - no official training but we’ll take up a spare bit of Tobruk pool courtesy of the Water Polo crew and play some fun games. 6pm start.

Thursdays - 6pm, open teams social games like usual.

An rumour has it the Tablelands Underwater Hockey Club will be joining in the fun for the next two Wednesdays. See you there!

Time to talk about LEG CRAMPS in Underwater Hockey. We’ve all experienced them and they stop you in your tracks. About to make your amazing power move and BANG - your leg (or both) just won’t work any more.

So why are they so common in UWH? Lot’s of people point to dehydration and electrolytes. While making sure you keep your fluids up during a game is important, research shows that you need pretty severe dehydration to cause cramps.

Our muscles tighten and relax all the time and it’s the nerves that sends the signal to the muscle to tell it when to do what. But sometimes that nerve ‘misfires’ and keeps the muscle in constant contraction - the dreaded cramp.

It’s so common in UWH because:
1. Swimming with fins on keeps your toes and feet in a pointed position which shortens the calf muscle for an extended period of time.
2. Cold water reduces circulation and increases tension in the muscles
3. Explosive stop-start swim sprints can ‘confuse’ the nerves
4. Fatigue makes the likelihood of cramps much higher too.

We all know to stretch when it hits. Getting in the water early and doing a gentle warm up helps the muscles and nerves acclimatise. Another helpful tip is to change your fin kick up a bit when you feel a ni**le of a cramp coming on. And make sure to fully rest your legs in the break between goals.

Did you know? Professional athletes use ‘pickle juice’ to cure a cramp in seconds. It works by the acid triggering a nerve response in your mouth that immediately relaxes the nerve that is misfiring. You don’t even have to swallow the disgusting stuff!

See you in the pool at 6pm, Thursday for a social game…..pain free!

Happy Father’s Day to these legends.

One of the awesome aspects of Underwater Hockey is that the whole family can play together. Cairns Crays has a number of Dad’s who play against and with their own kids in our social games.

As our club watches the kids grow up, we also watch the gentleman age with grace, skill and wisdom - and knee braces, taping etc! Congrats Fellas and have a great day.

Ok, ok, so a few people have been encouraging me to make a post about me! Here it is….my name is Tania K and I have been playing UWH for almost two years. This is a photo my mum took at my very first game. Dork alert.

As I pointed out to Josiah this week (because he was complaining about his ‘old’ body, being 22 and all…..) I am 52y/o and just starting to get the hang of this weird but wonderful sport. I can’t play every week as I have family commitments but I try to do the training and the social game each fortnight.

My fitness has improved rapidly and my skills improve slowly. Lately I’ve been doing puck skills practice at home on the bench with a piece of carpet to simulate the water resistance. It’s made a huge difference. One day I hope to be able to do one of those evasive manoeuvres Lance keeps trying to teach me.

At first it was pretty intimidating - but, Cairns Crays are just so welcoming and accepting of everyone. I’ve never been made to feel like I’ve let the team down, even when I have. It took a while to get to know who’s who at the club because everyone looks so different in and out of the water.

The BIG NEWS is that I scored 3 goals this week. That’s a total record for me. My previous best was 2 goals (one for our team and one for the other team - ooops).

So, deep gratitude to the coaches, committee and players that make it possible for someone like me to get fit and have fun. Hopefully this post inspires a few Cairns ladies to come down to the pool this Wednesday and try it out for themselves.

The usual madness at Thursday night social game tonight - even more crazy due to the almost full moon. Four team comp with a couple of subs each team. The warmer weather is bringing everyone out again.

Lovely to have Josiah and Anton back after their adventures at the World Championships in Türkiye.

Congrats to Caitlyn who elegantly out-swam her dad to score a goal. Nice attempt Brent - next time maybe.

Quote of the night from Lance: “Our team name should be margarine because we are so spread out”. FYI we fixed that and scored a couple of good goals.
