It wasn't my best, but wasn't my worst. Long post alert, and I hope you stay with it..
Sunshine coast marathon 2022. The 10yr celebration, and my 11th running. I have completed each one since the inaugural event in 2012. And I love it.
But today wasn't about my finish time. I knew I wasn't going into this years run in peak condition, and I was ok with that. It was a weekend about mates. Blokes being blokes (or boys being boys).
I one of my best mates come down, all the way from Airlie beach, for the weekend. He brought two of his mates. They were great guys. We drank beer. We had dinner out. And then we played with cars. "Our" vintage cars. The HQ Holden Run celebrated its 10th year yesterday too. I got to drive a classic VG Valiant 2 door Hard top. Cool by proxy. My mate Steve brought his monster 383 Chev Overlander Ute. There were over 300 Holden HQs- 2 doors, pano's, utes, 4 doors, huge V8's, bog stock standard. The full gammit.
It raised money for Do It For Dolly. Weather wasn't great, but the cars and atmosphere were. One observation I made was, "Us boys don't grow up, we just get older". There were some old boys just cruising, there were some boys giving their V8s a fair blat (I love the noise of a V8 on the gas).
After the news during the week about Paul Green. I just felt it needed to be more of a weekend about mates, rather than a clock. Boys, we need to look after each other. Check in, have a chat. You don't know where that conversation might go, but it may just be the most important one in someone's life.
