All turns have a very similar bottom turn… Laybacks included! Focus on doing a good bottom turn to set up, then it’s about leaning back more through the turn. There are 2 main types of laybacks, carving ones like this and then the snaps. It’s important to not push your board away from you and make sure you finish over it enough to ride out

Read the below for a summary of these 4 tips

1 - The bottom turn is one of the most important parts of surfing. Having enough rotation + being in time with it, is one of the greatest focuses for me when working with intermediate surfers.

2- Getting low when you near the whitewash - I see so many surfers get knocked off by whitewash that if they got nice and low, they easily would have gotten around and surfed the rest of the wave. When you get low you can absorb its power and get a boost of speed.

3- Perfect neutral stance - This is always one of my main focuses and is a cornerstone to my coaching style. Finding a correct stance leads to more balance, more speed and sets your body up right to rotated efficiently + it looks good!

4- Roundhouses - If it’s in your range of ability, focusing on performing these well will teach you really great technique.

If you found this helpful, be sure to follow as they is lots more coming!

1- Focus on fast, smooth strokes
2- Get your chin down on the board
3- Add 2 extra strokes before popping up

Most common mistake on backhand is always looking down the line of the wave.

You’d be amazed how much you can improve your backhand by just focusing on…

Looking up at the lip and then straight down after = Getting more vertical and actually snapping the board properly off the lip

I’m on vaccay so I’m havin a lil fun with it. But the lesson is seriously legit! The secret to speed and flow is understanding how each turn should land us back perfectly in the pocket and ideally coming down the wave… a snap off the lip = come down and out with speed. A carve… ideally we either finish it on rail coming down the wave or do similar to what Kelly does here so we can come back down the wave with speed and flow. A common mistake I see is finishing a turn in the bottom third of the wave and losing n connection to the rest of the wave. Shoutout Nick for the original clip
