Fear is a natural part of surfing. It keeps us from harms way, but it also keeps us from achieving our full potential. When we learn to acknowledge fear as a visitor, and equip ourselves to handle it when it comes knocking, we can truly break through our comfort zone in the water.

If you find yourself pulling back, sitting on the shoulder, or shying away, you’re not alone. There’s always a fine line where we can safely stretch our comfort zone, which is where an expert eye can really help. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of coaching to get you in the right mindset and proper physical preparation to work through this self-doubt.

You might notice the way you breathe quickens when you’re paddling out, whether it’s because you’re frothing the waves or scared of them. Either way, this response tells your brain you are in fight or flight mode, and reduces your oxygen intake, so you might start to feel winded or anxious before you’ve even surfed a wave! 😬 🏄
