Byron Bay Deep Sea Fishing Club

Byron Bay Deep Sea Fishing Club All keen fishermen of any age welcome. Like many other communities dotted along the coast, our members aren't just fishers.

THE CLUB

• Byron Bay Deep Sea Fishing Club

• The Club was Founded in 1974

• This year we celebrate 40 years in the local community.

• We currently have around 90 members and 50 key-holding skippers ranging in age from 19 to thier 80's.

• In the last two years we've had a massive membership surge - Particularly among younger members 22-38years old. We attribute this largely to the fact that th

ese guys are born and bred ocean dwellers and that the Club may in some way be positively helping them find deeper levels of friendship and comradery that may be somehow lost in this social media age. We are also helping them learn how to be better fishermen.

• Since the first settlement at Palm Valley in the 1840's and indigenous times before that, sharing the marine environment has been a right of passage. Just like any other ocean usage activity, fishing is deeply and inter-generationally entrenched in the waters of Byron Bay. They surf, kayak, kiteboard, SUP, swim, snorkel, SCUBA and free-dive. Our members are ocean dwellers and reasonable access to our local subsistence harvest stocks is as important to us as the respect for the oceans that maintain our collective health and wellbeing.

• The club represents the vessel based fishing community of Byron Bay and has inter-generational fishing ties to early settlement

• The Club meets at 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of every month (Except January) at The Byron Bay Services Club

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

• Ramp: The concrete and bitumen boat ramp at The Pass was the brainchild of the Byron Bay Deep Sea Fishing Club and was built through funding by Council and the PWC (Now known as NSW RMS). The ramp itself has withstood numerous cyclones and king tides and is as servicable today as it was when it was constructed in around 1977.

• FAD: The Club holds an Exemption Certificate to Install a Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) in Commonwealth waters at the 4Mile. As a result of this, we were the first fishing Club in NSW that was licensed to construct and deploy our own dedicated recreational fishing FAD system.
