The Jawbone Peak Half Marathon at the Cathedrals Challenge offers competitors the opportunity to explore some spectacular and unique terrain in the Cathedral Range State Park.
Starting at Cooks Mill Campground, runners will pass through Tweed Spur Rd, Messmate Track, Sugarloaf Saddle picnic ground, then up the Canyon Track which transitions from a walking track to impressive faces of Granite and the first true challenge of the run. Runners will find themselves a short run from the summit of Mt Sugarloaf, work there way onto the Razorback Track, passing South Jawbone Peak, the Farmyard Campground and then descend to Jawbone Saddle, along St Bernards Track towards Cooks Mill, then along the banks of the Little River and up Neds Gully Track. From here, runners once again start climbing up the Little Cathedral Track eventually summiting at the crest of the range on the Cathedral Circuit Track. Finally, runners now head south along the crest, on trail which follows the ridgeline and pass Cathedral Peak North and Cathedral Peak. Gradually the trails become more and more technical and after passing the trail to North Jawbone Peak, runners enter the Farmyard Campground and re join Jawbone Creek Track and descend to Jawbone Saddle Aid Station and then onto the finish at Cooks Mill for a well-earned soak in the river.
A visit to the Cathedral Ranges State Park led Race Director, Sean Greenhill on what he considered a fantastic trail running adventure. Subsequently, maps were poured over and soon enough a race course was developed that would provide trail runners with an adventure on the trails they would not forget…
With a half marathon and a 10km event, this is a great day out for everyone in a very unique and beautiful part of Victoria!
