To first understand the importance and beauty of a ceremonial postpartum bath we first need to understand the importance of warmth.
After the birth experience, yin wants to flow in to balance the space that channeled so much motivation and force, so much yang. Good quality yin supports rest, relaxation, lubrication and steadiness. It is the quality of energy that allows a mother to feel adequately rested, nourished and able to meet the new demands of her life without feeling overwhelmed or overburdened.
But too much yin can lead to depression, anxiety and loneliness. Too much yin can be isolating. Too much yin can cause stagnation. Imagine a night with no sunrise.
Just as the dampness of night is slowly alleviated by the warmth of the early rays of the sun, warmth is the key to bringing balance back to the body of the mother.
A warm herbal bath, surrounded by fragrance and nourishment is so important in balancing this excess yin or dampness. To show a mother self love, nurturing and healing. To let her truly be in her own space as she changes from maiden to mother.
In mayla postpartum culture it is common to use herbs and flowers in a warm bath, Some of these herbs include kaffir lime, lemongrass, citronella, turmeric, tamarind, betel leaf, Morinda Citrifolia, java ginger, ginger, galangal, Jasmin, rose and many others. They contain intrinsic properties uniquely blended to create a soothing and healing effect for the new mother, internally and externally.
This bath is so scrumptious! The smells of the flowers emphasises the beautiful aromas. Just imagine!
With love from your Postpartum doula,
