Southern Highlands Model Aero Club

Southern Highlands Model Aero Club Radio controlled model aero club The Club, which was formed in 1989, is situated on Council land known as "B**g B**g Common".

This parcel of land has major historic significance as it was the site of the first European settlement in the Southern Highlands from 1821. The flying strip uses part of an old grass airstrip that was used for charter aviation from 1978. The Club maintains all the substantial mown areas to ensure excellent conditions all year round. The Club caters for social and recreational flying. Types of air

craft flown include, sports, old timers, warbirds, scratch built, (both IC & electric), gliders and control line. the site is not suitable for 'free flight' models. Due to the nature of the flying site the Club has placed a size and power restriction on models for safety; no gas turbine engines, no models with a dry mass of 7kg or more. Modellers from other clubs wishing to fly as visitors should make contact for information if they are uncertain about their aircrafts suitability. The Club is affiliated with the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA). Membership, therefore, provides the modeller with Australia wide insurance cover (subject to compliance with requirements). Weekends are our main flying days with Sunday seeing the biggest roll up of members. All flying, of course, is subject to weather conditions and flying usually starts from around 9.30am. Flying is also possible 7 days a week providing several members are in attendance for safety reasons. The Club is able to teach new members to fly via a wireless 'buddy box' system, where the instructor can take back control immediately in need. Club training aircraft are provided so you don't have to outlay a lot of money to get started. A word of warning, once you are hooked on this sport your garage will become a necessary space for the many aircraft you will want to fly. Annual membership fees cover insurance (as mentioned above), ground maintenance and Club fees. These fees are reviewed annually to try and keep costs to a bare minimum. Contact the Club for the current rate. Visitors are most welcome but please comply with any instructions in regard to spectator areas and procedures. These are for your safety and wellbeing and also to comply with Federal Government regulations.

A good roll up of members were greeted to the slightest of winds from the north.
Lots of flying done in not the best of background skys however.
That aside you would kill for more flying days like this.

Once again the Vampire has a distinctive shape that as Kenny would say "would outlive religion". This is my 3rd Vampire over 16 years and today is its maiden flight. Martin kindly took it up and showed just how beautiful this aircraft is.

There are certain aircraft designs that never lose their appeal. The Panther is one of them, to me its shape in the sky gives me such great joy. Martin kindly flew my Freewing Panther so I could capture this iconic aircraft.

You could not have asked for a more perfect flying day. Wind from about zero to 5 kmh from the NE. I arrived just before 10am & had to leave around 1pm leaving the others with still perfect conditions.
Enjoy Martin doing things in the sky that my thumbs could never achieve.

Just adding to Davids excellent still photos.
It is a tradition at the club that each ANZAC day members bring some of their war birds for a group photo session and to fly them. An excellent turn out today in fine conditions.
I only brought of 2 of my warbirds, the Panther & Vampire, leaving 7 others at home. Most members have more than me, it is only the size of your car that limits how many you can bring.

A great roll up of warbirds for our annual Anzac Day meet up.

There are still a few aircraft in my hangar that I still do not have a video of, and this Great Planes Piper Cherokee is one. I asked David, one of our instructors if he would mind taking it up so I could video it. He jumped at the suggestion and produced some magnificent flying for me to capture.

In my last video I had mentioned the quality of the instructors our club is fortunate to have. Here is David {our Safety Officer) doing a maiden flight on his recently acquired Sopwith Camel. Once again we mere mortals just look on.

Our Club is very lucky to have great instructors who seem to effortlessly fly an aircraft much to the awe of others (me included). Here is Greg (also club president) putting his Waco through its paces, enjoy.
