On the water for the 2026 National Ocean Racing Championships thanks to Luke O'Garey and Paul Murphy

Last weekend, for the first time, the Australian Ocean Racing Championships were held in Tasmania. Hosted by the Wynyard Yacht Club Paddlers and the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club, the event attracted 80 paddlers from around the country.

Starting at the Wynyard Yacht Club on the Inglis River and finishing at the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club, a moderate south-south-westerly wind meant there was minimal surfing, and competitors contended with beam seas for much of the way.

Tasmanian paddlers put up a strong showing, medalling in most categories. North West Tasmanians (or paddlers originating there) did exceptionally well. Norton brothers Tom and Sam took out 1st and 2nd place respectively in the Open Male division, and Phoebe Woodhouse won the Open Female category.

Besides the high-standard field of paddlers, it was really great to see plenty of people out there just having a go; a handful of first-time racers and some paddlers who were just stoked to finish. A great championship, and a great community event all-round.

Yesterday was a great day for the 2026 Ocean Racing Championships from Wynyard to Burnie.

Thanks to Mark, Sara, Craig and Danny assisting with water safety out in the IRB's for the day and thanks to Belinda Tospell for manning the club for duration of event.
