📝 8 weeks out from the Burnie Ten.
A week of 49.3km across 3hr42, with two quality sessions, 2 gym sessions and a 17km hilly long run.
Wednesday was the main high intensity session: 10×1km @ 101–103% 10km pace with 90s recovery. This was a progression from the 600m reps I’d previously done in this block of Canova-style specific race-pace work. The aim wasn’t to suddenly run faster, but to extend the amount of time I could spend at the required intensity. Despite windy conditions, the reps averaged 3:16/km, finishing with a 3:04 final rep after pushing the last 500m.
Friday’s 2×15min threshold kept the aerobic work ticking over without creating unnecessary fatigue, while Sunday’s 17km hilly long run added some strength-endurance alongside the aerobic volume.
🔑 Training decision: progress the specific work by extending the reps rather than chasing faster splits.
💡 Coaching takeaway: Training is connected.
A good training program isn’t just a collection of isolated workouts, sessions build on what came before and prepare you for what comes next. The 600m reps from a few weeks back weren’t just a session to tick off, they were a step towards being able to handle this week’s 1km reps a similar intensity.
