Bungendore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Bungendore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Bungendore's local BJJ club, rolling twice a week out of Familia Fitness

15/02/2023

It’s with a great deal of sadness, but also a healthy dose of gratitude, that I have to announce the closure of Bungendore BJJ tonight. It’s become obvious this year that I can’t continue running the gym by myself. A couple of injuries weren’t the best start to the year, but it’s also a time commitment and workload that I’m really not able to deliver on at this point.
Sadness should be obvious - I’ve loved the experience of teaching over the past year, and building a small team of which I’m really proud.
Hopefully the gratitude is obvious too: the camaraderie we’ve enjoyed, the great rolls and watching students really start to get the fundamentals have all been deeply rewarding.
I have some heartfelt thanks to give; to all the students who graced us with their time and effort, but especially Father Mike. By far the most committed student, there from our first week through to the last.
To both coaches Steve; Steven Thomas for his excellent advice and partnership, and for markedly improving my game. I’m so glad I got to see you get your Faixa Marrom.
Steve Owens, for your support and coaching.
To Familia Fitness for their gracious hosting and making us feel like part of the family.

I hope for many of you this is just one step on your BJJ journey - it’s been just one part of a long journey for me, but one I’ve cherished.

Really fortunate to have the support from Stephen Owens at Primal BJJ, who visited last night to hand out some well deserved promotions.
Brown belt is a huge milestone, and our coaching team is all the stronger for Steve’s well deserved promotion. Anyone who’s rolled with Steve knows him as a deeply experienced and tough roll, and this promotion recognises a depth of expertise that is tough to achieve.
Congrats also to Mike picking up another stripe on his white belt - another step on the path, and a reflection of his dedication. Mike was there on our first night opening, and his progress has been great to watch.
I was also fortunate to receive a couple of stripes on my purple belt, which was a very pleasant surprise. Starting this club has really been a return to regular rolling for me after several years off, and it’s proving really rewarding.

Anthony Bourdain was always an excellent writer, but I especially loved when he wrote on something that the reader might know nothing about.

I am 59 years old and a Brazilian jiu jitsu addict.

If you’ve been thinking of giving BJJ a try you couldn’t pick a better time. Next week we’ll be kicking off a month of “what do I do first?”

The initial engagement can be a bit intimidating, so we’re going to really spend the time to give our crew techniques and strategies to close the distance and start a round on the right foot.

Our affiliate gym had a big birthday today - having spent half their time under the cloud of covid, I’m sure you’ll agree this is a hell of a milestone. Steve and I couldn’t be doing what we are without their support and coaching, so get up if you can to help them celebrate.

Shocking news this morning about the death of one of the titans of BJJ. Leandro Lo dominated the international competition scene for years, including going down a weight class and still winning gold at last years IBJJF world championships. He’ll be sadly missed by anyone who enjoys this sport.

The IBJJF and Jiu Jitsu community are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Leandro Lo. Lo was one of the greatest athletes our sport has ever produced. An example of a true black belt, martial artist and champion on and off the mats. Lo’s global influence, passion and dedication to Jiu-Jitsu will forever be remembered and honored for the great champion and person he was. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Lo family and may he rest in peace. 🙏🏼🕊
