The Illawarra Grevillea Park Botanic Garden

The Illawarra Grevillea Park was established in 1987 to house the Grevillea Study Group's plant collection and to showcase Australian native plants.

The Illawarra Grevillea Park was commenced in 1987 and opened in 1993 with the aim of housing the Grevillea Study Group's plant collection and providing Information about Australian native plants and how to use them in the home garden,. It has been maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers who meet at the park every Monday morning at 9am. The Park is open to the public on six weekends per year in Autumn, Winter and Spring to highlight the the varied flowering times of different species. Open day information will be published on this page and also on our webpage https://illawarragrevilleapark.com.au/ as well as local advertising in local media in the leadup to the open days. The enclosed area of the park contains display garden beds, walking tracks, the historic chapel, a bbq and picnic area and toilet facilities. Rare and unusual plants are available at the plant sales including species grevilleas and grafted plants. If you walk out beyond the back gate there is a rainforest walk which takes you across a creek and through woodland containing large numbers of red cedars, ferns, palms and other rainforest species. Extensive bush regeneration work has been carried out in this area to reclaim from the lantana which choked it 20 years ago. This area outside the back gate is open to the public all year round. It would be nice to have the park open more often but at present volunteer numbers are limited and it is not possible to open more regularly. One of the aims of this page is to show the public what is flowering throughout the year as there is something different every week and there are so many beautiful plants that the public don't get to see. We had a fantastic spring open, perfect weather, lots of visitors and lots of plants going to new homes. Plant sales were so successful that we just about ran out of plants. Thank you to everyone who came along, and to those who shared our open weekend details, it all helps enormously.
Our new resident echidna also won a lot of hearts, it seems to have decided to hang around the park for now. No sign of the diamond python who hangs around in the entry shed but apparently a couple of red bellied black snakes were spotted.
In my walks around the park over the weekend it was great to see people getting photos with the dressed up Cousin it plants, wandering through the River Red gum draperies and enjoying picnics or just a bit of quiet time of one of the many seats.
A walk around yesterday to get some pics turned up so many flowers including quite a few recent plantings that are flowering for the first time here. It's certainly a bumper year for flowers here at the moment.

Announcement of the winners of our raffle held over the recent open days for tickets to the Sounds of Rock concert at Bulli Showground next December.

And apologies but here are more echidna videos, this one appears to be half grown and was tucking into several ant's nests very enthusiastically. Our manager may have a bit to say about the disturbance of the mulch but most of the volunteers here think 'Ekky' is too cute!

It's our last open day for this year, and perfect weather again.
There was much excitement yesterday with sightings of an echidna and a black snake. Volunteer Jeremy captured this video of the echidna on it's wanderings yesterday.
I saw the black snake this morning, sunning itself under the ferns, watched by an optimistic kookaburra.

It's the final Saturday of our public open days for this year. The weather gods are smiling on us as well, and we have obtained more plants for sale.
The eremophilas are looking really lovely at the moment, with brightly coloured flowers set against grey or green foliage, keep an eye out for them as you wander around.
Bring a thermos or a picnic, enjoy the sound of the many birds here at the moment and just relax. It's the perfect day for it.

We had a very successful weekend, both the weather and plant sales. We do it all again this coming w/e Sept 12 and 13, 10am to 4pm each day.
Entry fee for adults is $7, children enter free, and dogs are allowed, and must be on a leash at all times.
We don't have many plants left for sale but we are trying to obtain more, and there will be book sales at the chapel. And don't forget to buy tickets in our raffle to win double passes to December's Sounds of Rock concert at Bulli Showground.
There is free parking near the front entry gate to the park, just a reminder that on Sunday markets will be on at the Showground. Follow the signs to the Grevillea park to your left as you drive in. The marshalls will try to direct you to market parking so let them know you are coming to the park.
Here are a few pics I took over the weekend, didn't have time to take any on Monday morning as we were busy with more tidying up and some of our volunteers have installed new path edging.

Another glorious day here at the park for Father's day. It's nowhere near as hot today so a bit more pleasant for your walk and picnics today.
We still have plants for sale and books in the chapel.
It's our third last open day for the year so come and see us!

Spring has sprung and the sun is shining here at the park for our September open days. We have lots of plants for sale, a quick note - tubestock is now $6, they are costIng us more to buy unfortunately.
This weekend presents a unique opportunity, our Fraser Island creepers are flowering already. Keep an eye out as you walk up the slope by the chapel, their bright pink flowers are unmissable.

Our final public open days for this year are the coming two weekends, (Sept 5, 6, 12 and 13).
Opening hours are 10am to 4pm each day.
Entry is $7 per adult, free entry for children, and dogs on a lead are permitted. There is free parking near the entrance.
We have plenty of plants for sale, ranging from tubestock through to grafted standards. Pricing ranges from $6 to $110 depending on pot size and whether the plant is grafted or not. There is a list of most of the available plants on our website. Books are also for sale at the chapel. We accept both cash and EFTPOS. Volunteers will be available to help with gardening advice each day. We will also be holding a raffle for prizes of tickets to the upcoming Sounds of Rock Festival at Bulli Showground on December 5. We are often asked when is the best time to visit the park. For sheer number of flowers and colour, it is now! The park is looking magnificent with the large flowered tropical Grevilleas now in full bloom. Ideal for flower spotting, bird watching or a quiet walk in a calming space. Bring a picnic, or just a thermos and enjoy the beauty of the park. As always we look forward to seeing our visitors.

Just under two weeks to go until our September public open days (5th, 6th, 12th and 13th) and we are currently getting a bit of much needed rain.
Continuing on from previous weeks we have another guest post from local photographer Brad Amos.

"I moved to the Illawarra in 2018 and stumbled into the park on a random weekend during one of the open days. I hadn't planned on staying long, but I was struck by the sheer variety and colour of the grevilleas. I left with a few plants and a habit.

Since then I haven't missed an open day. My front and back gardens are now full of grevilleas from the park, and every visit changes the plan for the next one.

I'm an architectural and landscape architecture photographer, so I notice the light in the park the way I would on a shoot, how it shifts through the space across a morning, catching the flowers, the birds, the insects moving through it all. I love wandering through with my black lab Digby and watching it change as the morning goes on.”

Our September public open days are coming up in about a fortnight's time, on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th.(first two weekends)
These will be our last ones for this year, so if you haven't visited us yet put these dates in the diary.
The park is looking lovely, rain today will ensure that it looks even better over the two weekends. I thought to myself today, 'gee it looks like it's September already' and then realised hey that's only two weeks away. The tropical or large flowered grevilleas are the stand out plants at this time of the year and they are looking great now.
Volunteers have been busy in recent weeks, a lot of mulching has been done, a new series of feature pots planted up and of course the usual clearing, tidying and other works that always need to be done in the lead up to the days.
I will post further details as the opens get closer, here are a few pics I took today and previous weeks.
