The Old Carey Cricket Club are immensely saddened by the passing of David Lord. David was the pivotal figure in the founding of our club in 1955, alongside his father Clive, and additionally sourced grounds for the club to play on given the only school oval at the time was at the Kew school campus and regularly in use! The Lord family were the driving force of the club, which grew from a single team to three relatively quickly, and scaled the heights of Dunstan Shield (Senior Turf) premiership success by 1970. David was the inaugural club captain, captained our first premiership in 1958/59 and a key member of the side that worked its way through to Dunstan success. A highly talented sportsman, and very popular team member, David won an astonishing nine 1st XI bowling awards with his unerring accuracy and use of the new ball hallmarks. David was our inaugural recipient of our life member status and was a member of our team of the first 50 years in 2006.
David was also a key member of the Old Carey Grammarians Association, of which he was an Honoured Life Member, whilst also a member of staff at Carey for 37 years, including long term school 1st XI coach. We play against the school side annually for the David Lord trophy, which is a highly anticipated game each season, and which we enjoyed David’s attendance at and perspectives on cricket.
What an all-round innings! Our condolences go out to Barbara, Andrew, Michael, Simon and the extended Lord family
