Sunshine Coast Phoenix Our purpose: to improve Basketball on the Sunshine Coast bringing together several existing Associations Noosa Cyclones, Suncoast Clippers & Caloundra Heat.

The Sunshine Coast Basketball Association was officially approved by Basketball QLD on February 17th 2015. This was the result of more than two years of consultation between the existing Associations on the Sunshine Coast. The outcome of this process is the merger of existing Associations: Noosa Cyclones, Suncoast Clippers & Caloundra Heat to join form the new entity, the "Sunshine Coast Basketbal

l Association" (SCBA). University Basketball (USCBC) members voted against the proposed merger, deciding to instead proceed in their current form as a separate Association so did not join. The Sunshine Coast Sports Federation's Benny Pike and Graeme Murphy were integral to the process providing independent guidance & professional support. Basketball Queensland's CEO Graham Burns provided well needed guidance in the process and engaged their legal team to provide advice around setting up our structure. Inaugural board consists of:
Chairman: Carl Wilkinson (Noosa)
Vice Chairman: Daniel Murphy (Suncoast Clippers)
Treasurer: Brett Buntain (Noosa)
Secretary: Gayle Jones (Caloundra Heat)
Director: John Corey (Suncoast Clippers)
Director: James Weder (Caloundra Heat)

The purpose of this merger, to form one united "Sunshine Coast Basketball Association", was primarily about improving the standard of Basketball on the Sunshine Coast. Existing Associations would continue to operate as per usual, becoming affiliated Associations or Clubs under the "Sunshine Coast Basketball Association" banner. All members from these clubs will be registered under SCBA with membership numbers expected to be approx 1300, putting us in the top 5 Associations in Queensland for member numbers.

The NBL is deeply saddened by the passing of Bruce Fitzgerald, the Brisbane Bullets’ first captain and a respected figure in Queensland basketball.

Bruce captained the Bullets in 1979 and played three seasons with the club, helping lay the foundations for its success.

A Basketball Queensland Hall of Fame inductee, Bruce’s legacy will live on.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones.

The Brisbane Bullets are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bruce Fitzgerald, our first captain and a stalwart of Brisbane's and Queensland's basketball community.

Bruce captained the club under Head Coach Bob Young in 1979 and played for the Bullets for three seasons, establishing himself as a crucial member of the Bullets roster and helping to lay the foundation for the organisation's success through the 1980s.

He went on to become a respected and beloved teacher on the Sunshine Coast, staying active within the State's basketball scene. He was admitted to Basketball Queensland's Hall of Fame in 2018.

Our deepest condolences go out to Bruce's family, friends and loved ones.

RIP CAP #1!!

The entire Sunshine Coast Basketball community would like to send its deepest condolences to the Fitzgerald family on the passing of Bruce.

Bruce was a pioneer, trailblazer and true legend of Queensland Basketball. He was the first captain of the Brisbane Bullets and in 1986 became the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles captain-coach in the first season of the Basketball Queensland State league.

Over the last forty years Bruce and the Fitzgerald family have become staples of the Sunshine Coast Basketball community and he will be missed.

Bruce is Sunshine Coast Basketball Cap #1 and his and the Fitzgerald family legacy will forever be etched into Sunshine Coast Basketball history.

Thank you Bruce.
