Evan “Red” (“The Difference”) Lloyd came to West Brunswick in 2007, a country boy down in the big smoke, barely into his 20s, studying over the road and living in Hilda’s. Tall and athletic, a disciplined and accountable defender, lightning-quick closing speed, knuckles purpose-built for spoiling. He was straight into the seniors. In his second season with the club he was a part of the 2008 Premiership team. In 2012, Red’s leadership skills saw him appointed as a Senior Co-Captain. His selflessness and commitment to the club were again on show in 2014, when he suffered a minor hamstring injury on the run into the grand final. He put the club first, ruling himself out and sacrificing his own chance at a flag so that the club could be in a better position to win it… and win it they did. Thankfully, he didn’t have to wait long for another chance, becoming a 2x Senior Premiership player in 2015.
Red was also a leader off-field, serving for many years on the committee and as a strong advocate for the introduction of Women’s footy, and for the broader principles and values the club represents.
He was President from 2022 until 2024, bringing management acumen and organizational skills to bear on the club’s long-term vision, updating the club constitution, and consolidating the inclusive and welcoming culture. After his presidency he remained involved in the club executive, pioneering a babysitting service which has allowed many parents to continue playing, and expanding the club’s revenue streams.
He played over 150 senior games between 2007 and 2018, and even though he does his work earlier in the days now, he is still ruining the afternoons (or mornings) of his opponents.
Those who are new to the club will only know him as an occasional trainer who spends more time on the massage table than out on the track, but those of us who knew him back in the day will always remember him… yeah, pretty much the same way.
Perhaps that’s the secret to his footballing longevity.
Congratulations on 250 games, Red. Only the 8th player in the club’s 57-year history to make it, and the first person since 1993 to pass the milestone.
Truly one of West Brunswick’s all-time greats.
