🌻🐧✨ Why are we called the South Melbourne Penguins?

*Trigger warning - mentions of mental ill-health and suicíde*

When the South Melbourne trugo club was on the brink of collapse a small group of enthusiastic Brunswick players and supporters came together to try and rebuild the South Melbourne club. It was also at a time when we had lost our dear friend Alycia to suicîde. Community and togetherness was at the forefront of our minds.

Penguins represent unbreakable bonds, and they often have one companion for life. Alycia had a strong connection with this meaning and even got matching penguin tattoos with her close friends.

Penguins also reside down in the bay in St Kilda, just a small waddle away from our home ground.

To commemorate our beautiful, vibrant, endearing, and much like a penguin, friend Alycia (fondly known to many as Blondie) we voted and unanimously named ourselves the South Melbourne Penguins.

On this day, the two year anniversary of Alycia’s passing, we encourage you to reach out to your mates and check in with them. Open up with a conversation like asking “are you okay?” or just let them know you are thinking of them. For someone who might be struggling with mental ill-health it could make all the difference.

VTA Preliminary Final

WE’RE IN THE FINALS! 👏🏼

The South Melbourne Penguins will go up against the Footscray Gumnuts in the final elimination match!

Hit off is 12pm THIS SATURDAY the 14th of March 2026 at the Yarraville Trugo Grounds

The winner will then meet an almost undefeated Sandridge in the GRAND FINAL the following week.

It’s been a big year for your Penguins. We would love your support again so come down to the Yarraville Trugo Grounds and cheer us on!

We went from wooden spooners last season to now playing finals – what an achievement! We’re so proud of our team and how far we’ve come.

We hope to see you on Saturday – wear all the red you own so they know who you’re cheering for… 🐧
