Footballers aren’t receiving the level of physical preparation they deserve or need.

The Football Performance Academy has been created to address this ongoing issue faced by youth and senior footballers across Australia, in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Next week this vision will become a reality.

3 Exercises Field & Court-Based Athletes Struggle With

In my 15 years of coaching, I’ve observed that many field and court-based athletes struggle with correctly executing the following three exercises:

1. Lateral Bound & Stick
2. SL Snap Down
3. Low Box Touchdown

Should this be a concern when screening athletes who participate in field or court sports?

Absolutely. It should be.

Can these exercises be incorporated into an athlete’s gym or field-based training program in small doses?

Definitely.

As coaches, it’s crucial not to overlook the fundamental movements. And for athletes, focusing on mastering the basics is key to building a strong foundation for more advanced exercises down the line.

The Marathon des Sables: A Legendary Challenge

Imagine this:

7 marathons in 6 days.
Across the unforgiving Sahara Desert.
Carrying a 14kg pack with limited food and water.
Battling 35-40°C heat.
And potentially facing sandstorms.

This is the challenge that awaits this athlete, both physically, mentally, and emotionally, in just under two weeks.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of training numerous athletes who’ve accomplished remarkable physical feats, but this takes it to a whole new level.

“Communication isn’t defined by what is said, but rather by what is heard.”

It could be argued that the way you deliver a message often matters more than the message itself.

From my experience in the industry, I’ve learnt that many personal trainers and strength and conditioning coaches spend excessive time focusing on periodisation and program design, yet overlook the foundational skills of communication.

Sure, when you’re new to the field it should be about learning different methods of program design and periodisation, but over time areas like communication, public speaking and psychology have a far greater role to play in athlete buy in and client engagement long-term.

If you focus on one area of growth as a coach this year, make it communication, public speaking, or psychology. It will yield long-term benefits that far outweigh learning another method of program design.
