The 2018/2019 sailing season has been a season of change for the Meeks stable, with the introduction of new crew members and a second boat. We have always planned to introduce new sailors into the VS class, and a second boat is the perfect way to do this. We have picked up the very green former national champion VS 2226, now known as Absinthe, and the new crew onboard have hit the ground running. As for the crew changes, Mick has opted to train up his son Gabe with the help of experienced sheethand Rodney Devon (Dev) on Absinthe, whilst Meeks have recruited Geoff Jakins as their new skipper alongside Mark and Robbie. For those who may remember, Geoff was already a member of the Meeks crew as he filled in for Mark during the 2017 Southlakes Regatta, and helped us secure the NSW State Championships.
The first half of the season was one of the most competitive in recent memory, with a fast charging mid-fleet and new contenders at the top creating intense racing week in and week out. Encouragingly, Absinthe have been regular contenders for the top spot in the heats at Teralba despite being "green" with the new ship and especially considering Gabe has sailed for only one half of a season. I guess Mick and Dev's synergy stretching back to the 16ft Skiffs in the early 2000's has been paying off! Meeks, however, have been battling set-up issues all season, but have shown glimpses of pace which have occasionally ended in a bang (quite literally on one occasion, with a split in half boom whilst in second position at the Teralba Regatta). We feel that we are the right track to finding our mojo again, and hope that this shows in our results at the upcoming nationals at Neranie Sands.
Speaking of the Nationals, they take place between the 6th and 12th of January, at one of our favourite venues/holiday destinations Neranie Sands on the Myall Lake near Bulahdelah. We will try to post regular updates with results and occasional GoPro footage so you guys can follow us as we go.
