We had a great walk yesterday out at Iron Blow. This route hasn’t been done for a number of years, so it was nice to revisit it. Wolf led our group of six on an easy, enjoyable wander through the area.

Ben took on the navigation and guided us to the open‑cut mine without too much trouble. We followed the pipeline for a while, walked through beautiful mulga country, listened to the birds, and admired how green everything is looking.

Lunch was a billy and a good explore around the old settlement ruins. On the way back, Claudia took over navigation and brought us safely back to the cars.

We finished the day at the Mt Gipps Resort Hotel with a well‑earned beverage before heading back to Broken Hill.

🌞 Saturday gifted us one of those perfect walking days — bright sun, gentle wind, and the countryside showing off its best colours.

🚗 We drove out of Broken Hill to Wilangee Rd and followed the creek bed to the old ruins, exploring what’s left (it’s always the fireplaces that seem to survive the years).

🏚️ Crossing the creek, we wandered through the remains of the tiny village, then climbed the hill opposite to find the unmarked graves outlined in stone — quiet, simple, and full of history.

🍵 Lunch was a relaxed billy in the creek bed with good company and plenty of chatter.

🍻 And of course, we finished the day at the Silverton Pub — the perfect ending to a lovely outing.

Thanks Boris and Wolf for sharing your photos.

We have another walk this month and it's another new one for a lot of us, so if you're keen please come along on Saturday 1st of August, we look forward to seeing you there! If you're not already a member you can sign up on the day.

The Mundi Mundi Ruins Walk takes us across beautiful private pastoral country between Belmont and Eldee Stations, giving the Rangers a chance to explore one of the region’s lesser known historic sites. Along the way we visit the 19th century ruins of the old homestead, including the stone foundations, water tank, well, and several graves that remind us of the early families who lived and worked out here.
It’s a great mix of outback scenery, local history, and quiet open spaces — exactly the kind of hidden treasure our Rangers love discovering. A fascinating walk for anyone interested in heritage, geology, and the stories tucked away across the Mundi Mundi plains.

Hidden Treasures Walk — Sunday 26 July 2026

What a great day out exploring a new area just off the Silverton Road. We were lucky enough to meet the station owner, Trevor, at the start — a walking encyclopaedia who shared some fascinating history about the area.

Wolf led us through the landscape and explained the rock formations and different types of rocks we came across. Old mines were scattered everywhere, and the vegetation was looking beautiful after all the recent rain.

We stopped for an early lunch and boiled the billy on the ridge near the Nine‑mile South Mine, then again near the Great Western Mine. Wolf even squeezed in a map‑reading and compass lesson, which everyone enjoyed.

A small group today, but a really enjoyable walk in a hidden pocket of country. Always good to explore somewhere new.
