It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this page, so much has happened!

CJP Qurios/Dexter was broken in mid last year, had a handful of rides and has been spelling since October after I was injured at work.

This is our first ride back after a few lunging sessions and he was super! Can’t wait to see how he develops with some more strength and condition

Sadly not long after I bought Dexter home, Elmo was diagnosed with navicular syndrome and had to be retired. With no other horse to ride, I waited a few years till Dexter was broken so I’m over the moon to be back in the saddle again

Last Saturday Elmo and I headed out to Lancefield for Bolinda Riding Club’s dressage jackpot, and I’m very happy with our results to say the least!

I felt I didn’t ride a very nice 2.3 test, there was a bit of a lack of connection and accuracy, placing us 3rd on 63%. However, we redeemed ourselves in the 2.5 riding a lovely tests for 2nd with 68%! We also gave our first Level 1 test a go, and to my delight we placed 4th with 63% and some very lovely comments from the judge.

To top off the day, Elmo and I pointed up into Level 1! This has been a big goal of mine since mid last year and I’m so proud to have at last gotten there. Elmo is feeling super in our training and we couldn’t be more ready to tackle the new level and continue getting better. To think that only a few years ago we started as an inexperienced level 4 combination, it’s crazy!

Thank you to those that continuously support me and my passion, I appreciate it so much.

After another chunk of time away concentrating on school, I’m back!

Elmo has been going great after my clinic with Judy Dierks! We are starting to get back to where we left our training last year and he’s feeling great.

There’s already a few competitions on the calendar so stay tuned

Earlier this week Elmo and I hit a bit of a roadblock in our training. I felt like our work was sloppy and completely disconnected, and as if I was doing laps around the arena and getting nowhere! Yesterday morning I got up early to ride (an effort to try and beat the heat) and was feeling hopeful that this ride would be better than our last.

To begin with, everything felt just as ordinary as it had earlier, so I stopped and took a walk to relax and have a think about what I was doing. I decided to try out some different ‘tools’ and simplify what I was asking to try and get Elmo to relax and work through and for the last 15 or so minutes of our ride he was an absolute dream.

Looking at this now, I’ve realised how important it is to take a step back to reflect on what we as riders are doing. It is so easy to become frustrated, send mixed signals or ask too much of our horses in an effort to reach our goals. As I was riding around, I didn’t take into consideration that Elmo had been out of work for some time and wasn’t quite ready to continue with the ‘harder’ work just yet, so stripping things back to basics for another few rides is definitely what he needs to regain a little more condition before moving forward!

After exams, year 12 orientation and a massive three-week trip to Europe with school, I’m happy to say that I’ve settled back in at home and am in the process of bringing (my very fat) Elmo back into work, and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop BALASAR and sharing my journey.

More updates coming soon!

Last Sunday Elmo and I competed once again, this time at the Lancefield HRCAV Dressage Jackpot - a bit of a last minute decision to practice the 2.4 and 2.6 tests for TTT in November!

I was really optimistic after Elmo working quite nicely in the warm-up however everything felt like it fell apart once we entered the arena! Both tests felt very lazy and disconnected and I came out of my second test really disappointed with how we performed.

Eventually, we headed over to check the scores and to my complete surprise, we managed to place 1st and 2nd for jackpot champion overall with 72% and 59% respectively. Looking back at videos of my tests, I can see it was nowhere near as bad as what I felt, but it also isn’t the best work that we can do, but sometimes this is the case!

Elmo is now enjoying a well-deserved break from dressage for a few weeks while we focus more on our jumping and fitness in preparation for Yarrambat Horse Trials, which I’m so excited for!

Thank you to Mustad Saddleworld and Purple Painting for sponsoring the class!
