The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, or Bingham Cup is the biennial world championships for the gay and inclusive rugby community. First held in 2002, the tournament was created in memory of 9/11 hero Mark Bingham, who lost his life fighting back against terrorists on board United flight 93, which crashed into the ground near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Happy Pride Month!

This month we recognise that Pride comes with history and struggle for recognition. So, at the beginning of Pride Month, we thought we'd share a bit about the Australian context of pride and what was happening here following Stonewall in the US and the galvanisation of the LGBTIQA+ rights movement across the world.

The decriminalisation of homosexuality in Australia took over 20 years from the first state to the last.

We celebrate Pride at different events in different states too.

The Bingham Cup Organising Committee decided to celebrate Pride in June, the month that holds history in Australia and worldwide for protest and activism to create a safer, more inclusive world.

Today is your 56th birthday. While you were taken far too soon, there are literally thousands of people who have played rugby because of you, who celebrate you and your memory.

On behalf of every player, support, friend of the rugby community that got involved in rugby because the strength of your memory made us safer to be part of this brilliant game, we give thanks for you.

May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia or colloquially known as IDAHOBIT.

Today is the day we commemorate the date in 1990 that the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases.

We also look forward to working towards the removal of discrimination towards LGBTIQA+ communities.
