The Vanuatu Cycling Revolution

The Vanuatu Cycling Revolution Circumnavigate one of the most challenging, most scenic and most rewarding rides in the Pacific Isla What is The Vanuatu Cycling Revolution?

Well, the title says it all. It is a road cycling participation event circumnavigating Vanuatu's main island, Efate Island. A full 130km lap (revolution) of the island on one of the most scenic, most challenging and most rewarding rides you will ever do. This will be the inaugural event in what is set to become an annual event on the Vanuatu calendar. Organisers have had a meeting with the Vanuatu

Tourism board, who have expressed their enthusiasm and support for such an annual ride. Your lap will start in the crazy capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila. Port Vila really is a crazy city. It is like going back in time. The shop fronts, the run down streets, the city markets and the scattering of retro pubs and bars all add to the character of this city. Once you successfully navigate yourself out of Port Vila, past the hundreds of Mini-buses that travel up and down the main street, and the odd pothole that could almost swallow one of these many Mini-buses, you will actually find yourself on a great quality road. The road around Efate has only just been fully sealed in recent years, and is in excellent condition. The ride will take you past some spectacular coastline, where the sand is as white as snow, and the water is a vivid and bright blue. You will pass through villages where you will still see locals in traditional dress. And you will have to conquer a climb up a mountain like no other. It is no more than 1km in length, but it's sheer steepness will test even the most seasoned cyclist. You wouldn't be the first to have to walk part of it. The beauty of this ride is once you are out of town, you will hardly see a car. There are very few cars around the back of the island, so you will be able to soak up all the views, with almost no care in the World. The ride is so great, we reckon that you will want to do it twice. So we have already prepared for that, by organising a second lap in the opposite direction. The event is set to take place in early November, 2015. Price and packages can be found on the Facebook home page. Numbers are limited and a handful of spots have already been secured. Be one of the first to ride and conquer this amazing road, right on our very own door step. DATES: November 7 to November 11, 2015

ITINERARY

Saturday afternoon - Fly from Australia to Port Vila. Settle in to hotel, put the bike together and get to know your riding companions. Sunday morning - The reverse lap. Prepare yourself for some amazing sights and one challenging climb! Afterwards hit the pool and celebrate with a cold beer or cocktail. If you giving it a crack twice, go easy on the hard stuff, if once was enough, then let loose. Monday morning - The forward lap. You will hit a monster of a climb at the 15km mark. From then on it is all plain sailing with some more amazing views. Afterwards hit the pool side again and unwind looking at the beautiful harbour views, especially on sunset. Tuesday - you have a day to explore many things on offer. Spend a few hours in the Blue Lagoon you so wanted to immerse yourself in as you rode past it or at one of the exquisite sandy coves with magically coloured blue waters. Or if you really want some adventure take a day trip to Tanna Island to see a live volcano! Wednesday - half day to cruise about exploring the place before an afternoon flight back to Australia. NOTE: You must take out your own travel insurance. A provided copy of your travel insurance will be mandatory to participate in this ride. Most travel insurance companies will cover recreational cycling abroad (which does include this ride which is NOT a race).

The Vanuatu Cycling Revolution is more than just a cycle ride, it is an adventure. An adventure that encompasses both cycling and the opportunity to see another culture right on the doorstep of our own.
Vanuatu is a developing nation, that gives you both a sense of what you have and also of what you don't. On the one hand the Vanuatu culture in many respects is to be envied, it is relaxed and less stressful than our own fast paced stressful way of life. On the other hand it is a nation that makes do with the bear necessities of life. Seeing their very modest living standard makes you realise how easy we sometimes have it with all of the Western World's modern conveniences and luxuries at our disposal.
Since my teens, cycling has been far more than a passion of mine. Sometimes it has been an escape, other times it has rescued me when I have gone astray. So each time I return to Vanuatu for my next adventure, I try and take some little things to brighten a few peoples lives. My focus has shifted from my initial idea, and now I would like to put as many people in Vanuatu on a bike as I can, each time I return. For that moment they might need an escape or an outlet.
This trip I took over two brand new rockin' Mountain Bikes and two new helmets (of course, hopefully they get worn) for some village kids. I would like to say straight up, this would not have been possible without the generous support of some of my dearest friends. I was merely the delivery boy delivering the generosity of others. Seeing the joy on the childrens faces when I made these deliveries was something to behold and I am forever in debt to my friends who made this possible.

THANK YOU so much:

and last but NOT least Donna McIntyre-Lane!!

For putting Vanuatu on a bike one bike at time.

The Vanuatu Cycling Revolution - Edition #3

I have just returned from another amazing trip to Vanuatu. This is the biggest contingent of cyclists yet, to set out on the adventure and easily the biggest group of cyclists to ever travel around the Efate Island ring road at one time.

In all 9 cyclists took part in the event, with all riders successfully and safely circumnavigating the island. It truly was a great ride with great people - an adventure we will all hold dearly in our memories.
