Commercial Rowing Club

Est in 1877, we are Queensland's premier rowing club and home to Australian rowing champions. See our calendar for learn-to-row sessions.

We have over 200 club members ranging in age from 16 to 76, and we offer a variety of rowing programs including; learn to row, social rowing, school rowing, corporate rowing and competitive rowing. LEARN TO ROW – we provide coaching for people who want to learn how to row. SOCIAL ROWING – we provide coaching for beginner rowers who only wish to ‘go for a paddle’ (this is subject to crew availabili

ty). SCHOOL GIRL/BOY ROWING – we provide coaching for school girl and boy rowers (14 years of age upwards) for on-water and off-water fitness during the off-season. CORPORATE ROWING – we provide coaching for corporate rowing crews participating in the club’s annual Crewsin’ the Stream Corporate Rowing Regatta. COMPETITIVE ROWING – we aim to develop our rowers at both elite and master level performing at local, state, national and international rowing regattas.

It was an action-packed 4 days at the Gold Coast for the 2026 Oceania and Australian Beach Sprint Championships (3-6 Sept) 🔥

The sun shone and the water sparkled as competitors charged into their boats for furious high-rate rowing before sprinting back up the beach to hit the buzzer ☀️

It was great to see some of our young athletes participating in this format for the first time alongside our veteran champions Samantha Blanchard and Jack O'Toole 💪

Meet Maddie – Olympian, World Rowing Champion, mother and older sister to Head Coach Jacinta Edmunds.

While Maddie started rowing in Year 8, it wasn’t until after winning the Head of the River in the First VIII at the end of Year 10 that she knew she wanted to be a rower. Her goal was the Olympics.

At just 16 years old, Maddie represented Australia. She continued to represent Australia until the end of her very impressive rowing career, racing in lots of different crews and applying her learnings from each experience.

“There’s always been this belief in our family, particularly with my sister and me, that if you want to do something and you’re prepared to work for it, then you can give yourself a real chance”.

“Putting on the green and gold is incredibly special. It represents much more than just the result of one race. There were so many highs and lows, injuries, comebacks, disappointments and moments where I had to prove something to myself. I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to represent Australia for as long as I did”.

Now mum to twin girls, motherhood has definitely changed the way Maddie thinks about her rowing years and Olympic experience.

“I’d absolutely love for my girls to row one day. But we would never want them to feel like they have to row or that there’s an expectation because of our family history. I want them to find something they love and choose their own path”.

And her advice for the next generation?

“Trust the process and trust your race. You can’t control everything that happens on race day. All you can do is your best, learn from what happens and take that into whatever comes next”.

It was 1988.

The great Wal Hughes was a legend in both the Qld rowing community and at Commercial Rowing Club.

⭐️ The man had 2 boathouses
and countless boats named after him.

He joined CRC in 1930 at 18 years old and spent his last season with our club in 1996 when he was 84.

A committee member for 29 years.

A life member.

He was totally immersed in all aspects of club life, including leading the way in Commercial’s 1988 Australia Day re-enactment of the arrival of the first fleet…

Applications for Play On! Sports Vouchers are open.

Eligible Queensland families can apply for up to $200 to help children aged 5–17 years participate in sport.

CRC is a registered Play On! activity provider.

Applications close on Friday 18 December 2026.

The vouchers expire on Friday 18 June 2027.

Twenty-six years in the same boat and they still go looking for someone to race home against!

It started in 2000. Harry was between partners, Jeff had just come home from Europe and was muddling around in an old single. Harry rowed over and asked if he wanted a crack at a double, and that was that. Jeff had barely rowed as a kid, so the chance to share a boat with someone who knew what they were doing was one he wasn't about to pass up.

What's kept them there? A division of labour so easy it became the whole point. Harry books the flights and digs out the best accommodation, Jeff sorts the entries and boats, and each simply takes on what they do best. Harry strokes, Jeff sits in bow, and Harry happily lets Jeff tinker away at their stroke, always experimenting, always evolving together.

The moment they both point to came in a national final, they were behind with 250 metres to go. Jeff called for one last push, spent, but certain of one thing - if he kept going, Harry would be there for every stroke. They won by two-hundredths of a second.

These days you'll still find them chasing a bigger boat down the river on the row home, seeing how long they can hold on. It takes real character from the other crew to race them rather than pull away, and for Jeff, that's CRC in a nutshell.

Six years ago, a Year 8 rower walked into Commercial for the first time. She never left.

Get to know Cianna - one of the many young athletes who make our club feel like one big family. Juniors, open, masters - it doesn't matter what boat you're in, everyone at CRC shows up for each other, and that's exactly what's kept Cianna here through six seasons on the water.

Ask her for a favourite memory and she won't hesitate - winning the Under 17 Women's Eight at the 2024 NSW State Championships. Crossing the line to a boat full of happy tears - coaches included - is a moment she says she'll never forget.

Now Cianna's chasing the next one. This August, she heads to the University of Kansas to row and study Aerospace Engineering, with sights set on one day working at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Big goals, bigger heart - and still the same rower who can't wait to get back in a boat.

Because one day, she'll be back at Commercial too. This time, as a masters rower!

Once part of the crew, always part of the crew.
