“..Despite my weakened condition, I kept going with my training in the warrior arts. I never quit. Slowly, I began to regain my health. Eventually I recovered from the illness that drained me so for five years of my life. Looking back on my period of illness and recovery, I came to realize that I had consistently kept at my training the whole way through, no matter what my condition, no matter how weak or drained I had felt.

From this experience, I learned the value of consistent training – adjusting the methods, pace, and focus to fit my body and mind no matter what the state of my mental and physical health. I now know that there is in consistent training a series of developmental stages appropriate for all the stages of life. There is an appropriate way to train when you are young and vigorous. There is an appropriate way to train as you enter the advanced years of your life. There is an appropriate way to train when you are ill, and there is an appropriate way to train when it seems that no training will fit. Even facing death at the close of life is a form of training; most people get caught between their fear of death and their hopes for immortality. Accepting the inevitability of death as something natural at that moment is a form of training for the warrior. Consistent training, ever fitting the goal to the means at hand, is the only way to cultivate the true strength that transcends all limitations.”

THE RIGHT WAY TO LIVE

What people regard as the right way to live nowadays reminds me of growing plants in greenhouse conditions: the results tend to be the opposite of hardy. People nowadays live in a kind of vegetative state—they're not really alive at all...
Fear prevents people from doing so many things. They look after themselves far too well. If people would only not take so much care of themselves and have a little more confidence in themselves, a bit of courage—my teacher used to say that if one had no courage, there was no hope—with courage, anything can be accomplished. Also, faith and belief are essential.

Hatsumi sensei was told by Takamatsu sensei that he would not be a Meijin 名人( martial arts master ) but rather become a Tatsujin 達人( accomplished/completed human being ). At first, Hatsumi Sensei said he was disappointed and saddened by this. However, after some time, he came to the realisation of what a great compliment this was from Takamatsu Sensei.
Hatsumi Sensei has continually expressed that he is not teaching us how to fight, but rather, how to live. I think if people took the time to continually refresh their minds of this, than people would mature in their martial practice of Hatsumi Sensei’s Budô.

I will add that sensei said that mastery of Budô can be attained by many people if they devote themselves to the practice. However, not all ‘so called’ masters of the martial arts actually become balanced in all areas of their lives.
I believe Takamatsu sensei’s comment to Hatsumi Sensei was Kyojutsu. Even though Hatsumi sensei was becoming masterful in Budô, he wanted him to go beyond merely becoming a master of the martial arts to becoming a true master of life and living!

Are you are student of the teacher?

Ask yourself, who decides you have become a student? Just because you visit the Dōjō, pay your fees and sweep after class, does this automatically make you a student of the martial arts, the Dōjō and the teacher?
Regardless of who has their name on the Nafudagake ( nameplate hook ) this also doesn’t mean they are still considered students of the Dōjō.

In this day and age of the ‘consumer mentality’, people think they are entitled to get what they want when they pay money to join a Dōjō. In the martial arts, this is far from the truth. Your fees merely allow you the privilege to enter the school and from there, provide time for you to prove yourself.
That is all.

At anytime, the teacher may ask you to leave. They are not concerned about money, but rather if the individual holds the right temperament and heart for the martial arts. I remember hearing from Sôke that Takamatsu Sensei would often quickly turn people away and not accept them for training if he saw they didn’t have what it took.
Ultimately, if you are wanting to study under a teacher, it is the teacher that decides when you become a student of theirs, not you. You can want them to be your teacher, yet in truth, it needs to be a mutual agreement that is sealed by the teachers decision to accept you. This could take months or even years. It also may never happen.
The teacher Is looking for someone that has the heart, conviction of will and true soulful desire to study the arts, live as a martial artist, and make the many sacrifices do so.
The connection will be felt when this decision has been made through Shinden,Taiden and Kuden.
From then, it all depends on how much the student can grasp the teachings, remain connected to the teacher, and flow with the Bufū ( martial wind ).

Remember, the teacher gives you their life, while the student just gives them their time.
