DIV 3-1 MEN PIPPED IN A PRELIMINARY FINAL SHOOTOUT

A couple of weeks ago, we were salivating at the prospect of an all-Easts Finals clash between our Div 3-1 Gold and Div 3-2 Black sides.

Sadly, that tantalising showdown never came to pass.

Our 3-1 Gold side finished Minor Premiers, a commanding 8 points clear of St. Andrews. Easts Black finished 3rd, with Bulimba another 6 points behind in 4th.

But Finals hockey cares little for ladder positions.

Last week, St. Andrews defeated Easts Gold 3–0 in the Qualifying Final.

Yesterday brought a second chance against Bulimba — a team the Tiges had beaten 3–2 and 8–2 during the season.

The afternoon began badly when Captain Peter Morris was ruled out during the warm-up, but the Tiges still took a 1–0 lead into half-time.

Goals from Danny Beukes and Millsy twice put Easts ahead.

Twice, the Bulls fought their way back.

Half-Time: Easts 1–0
Full-Time: Easts 2–2

And so, yet again, a Penalty Shootout would decide who advanced to the Grand Final.

We scored one.

Bulimba scored two.

And just like that, a magnificent season came to an abrupt and painful end.

No excuses. Finals are brutal, and Bulimba earned their place in the Big One.

But one disappointing fortnight does not erase everything this team achieved across the season.

Minor Premiers by 8 points — the best team over the long haul.

Congratulations, fellas. A terrific season, even if it ended one match earlier than we had hoped.

DIV 1 MEN - PRELIMINARY FINAL - A GAME OF TWO HALVES

How would our previously unbeaten Minor Premiers respond after last week’s Penalty Shootout loss?

Today they took on the Bulimba Bulls, who had ended Labrador’s season last weekend.

It was the first day of Sprummer — with plenty of heat in the air and even more on the pitch.

The teams had met twice this season, with the Tigers winning both encounters: 4–1 and 3–2.

How would the Bulls cope without the injured Michael Francis?

And how would the Tigers fare without the calming influence of Knowlsey and Matt Pembroke?

After 22 minutes, the floodgates opened.

Three quick-fire goals to the Tiges: Paz started proceedings from a Penalty Corner, then Skip Hawthorne added a brace.

Well, this is easy.

The Tiges led 3–0 at half-time and appeared completely in control. This could finish six or seven. Perhaps I could even leave early.

Luckily, I didn’t.

Coach Afonso must have whispered some quiet but stirring words to his Bulls during the break, because they emerged as a different beast.

Bulimba owned a good part of the second half.

Two goals — both from Penalty Corners — dragged them back to 3–2, and suddenly the Bulls were in the ascendancy.

Could our young Tiges keep running with them in this heat?

It turns out they could.

But, crikey, it was close.

Final Score: Easts 3 – Bulimba 2

The Bulls gave us precisely the contest we needed before taking on St Andrews in next week’s Grand Final.

One more game, Tiges.

The Big One.

JT2 GIRLS’ SEMI-FINAL ENDS IN A SHOOTOUT

In an Elimination Semi-Final, it was Valley (3rd) versus Easts (4th).

The teams had met three times during the season, with Easts winning twice and Valley once.

Ascot were Minor Premiers, followed by Commercial, Valley and Easts.

The Tiges entered the Finals in good form, including a win over second-placed Commercial just three weeks ago.

A close match was always on the cards.

Half-time: 0 – 0

Full-time: 0 – 0

So, what every cool young hockey lady loves after a tense, goalless semi-final — a Penalty Shootout!

It took six attempts each to decide who would play next week.

We scored three. They scored four.

Ouch.

Hold your heads high, young ladies. You did ever so well, and the effort and grace you showed throughout this game were wonderful.

JT4 GIRLS PIPPED AT THE POST

In an Elimination Semi-Final, it was South West United (3rd) versus Easts (4th).

The teams had met four times during the season, with SWU winning twice and the other two matches ending in draws. Never had more than a single goal separated them.

So while this was a good challenge for the Tiges, it was certainly doable.

SWU made it just that little bit harder by scoring in the 18th minute.

Half-time: SWU 1 – Easts 0

But the young Tiges were still very much in the hunt.

Alas, the second half remained goalless. Easts couldn’t find the equaliser, and et voilà — their 2026 season came to an end.

Full-time: SWU 1 – Easts 0

Pipped by the narrowest of margins.

Well done on your season, young ladies. 🖤💛

J1 BOYS WILL NOW PLAY FOR BRONZE

Bulimba were the runaway Minor Premiers, with Commercial finishing second—11 points behind—and Easts another four points back in third.

That set up a 2 v 3 Semi-Final between the Tiges and the Commercial Cobras.

The teams had met three times during the season, with Commercial winning twice and Easts once. Another competitive contest was expected.

But the first half belonged to the Cobras, who struck three times—all from penalty corners.

The Tiges rose to the challenge after the break. They scored twice and won the second half 2–1—but the damage had already been done.

Full-time: Commercial 4 – Easts 2

Commercial will now play Bulimba for Gold, while Easts face St Andrews in the Bronze Medal match.

Our boys have beaten both Grand Finalists this season, so they have shown they belong among the competition’s best.

One more game, young fellas. Go finish a very good season with some bronze around your necks.

UNDER 14T1 GIRLS RUN INTO THE NORTHERN EXPRESS

Norths Blue were the undefeated, runaway Minor Premiers.

Easts finished the season second, 12 points behind them—so the size of the challenge was no secret.

Norths led 1–0 at half-time, but the Easts defence was holding firm.

Then, early in the second half, the Northern Express hit full speed.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Three goals in five minutes—and suddenly there was no way back.

Full-time: Norths Blue 4 – Easts 0

But our girls’ season is not over.

They now face UQ in the Preliminary Final. Win that, and they earn one more crack at the Northern Express—this time with a Grand Final on the line.

Good luck, young ladies. Go get yourselves another ticket.

Good luck to all our Tigers taking the field this weekend and into next week! 🐯💛🖤

We still have 17 Easts teams alive in finals, with 13 teams taking the field across Grand Finals, Bronze Medal Matches and Preliminary Finals over the coming days.

A special mention to our BHL2 Men, PL2 Women, PL3 Women and PL4 Women, who have earned the week off and will take their place in next weekend’s Grand Finals.

Get out to the fields, wear your yellow and black, and help cheer our Tigers on. Your support makes all the difference!

DIV 4 LADIES ALSO TAKE THE “EXCITING” ROUTE

Last weekend, our Div 4 Ladies followed our Div 2 and Div 3 Ladies into a Qualifying Semi-Final battle against Uni of Queensland.

The Div 2 game was close.

The Div 3 game was closer.

Surely the Div 4 game wouldn’t follow the same script?

Or would it?

Surely Easts supporters couldn’t be made to endure another tense battle in the fading winter light.

Even the photographer didn’t hang around until the end. He headed north to Redcliffe.

His loss—because the Div 4 Ladies put on quite a show.

This time, UQ were the Minor Premiers. 3 points behind, Kedron finished second, with Easts one point further back in third. Tough League.

The teams had met twice during the season: a 1–0 win to UQ and a 4–1 win to Easts.

So yes—another close game was very much on the cards.

This is an exciting little team, with a fine mix of experienced campaigners and young, fast, skilful players.

Full-time: 0–0

You know the script!

Yet another dastardly Penalty Shootout.

It was time for some brave ladies to step forward and make the difference.

Goalkeeper Charlotte was magnificent, repelling three UQ attempts.

Tabatha converted our second.

Ruby converted our third.

But we needed one more.

Just one more.

Up stepped our own Argentine Lioness, Victoria Abba.

With Las Leonas newly crowned world champions—and victory quite literally in her name—she coolly converted Easts’ fifth and final shootout to send the Tiger camp into delirium.
