Most people move through BJJ with a stiff frame, trying to drag their body around with their head and shoulders.

Free up the hips and think of them like a gyroscope—able to tilt, rotate and adjust in every direction while the rest of the body follows.

Instead of fighting the floor, the hips allow you to connect to it, redirect force through your body and use the floor as a source of energy.

Free hips let the River flow.

So important it's worth repeating!

These 5 spots can make or break your BJJ, Judo, kickboxing, Karate, golf etc.

Shoulders, the point at the base of the neck, and both hips.

When they’re connected, movement gets cleaner, power feels effortless, and you stop fighting yourself and the mat. You start using what your opponent gives you.

When they’re not, everything feels heavy, submissions stall, and you get broken down easily.

If this doesn’t click yet, it can be taught.

Most sweeps don’t fail because your opponent is too heavy. They fail because you’re sending the energy in one direction while your own body is trying to go somewhere else.

A sweep isn’t just about moving your opponent. Your whole body has to move with the intention of arriving at the end position. If your hips stop, your shoulders fight the rotation, or part of your body gets left behind, you become the thing stopping your own sweep.

Here’s a simple test:

Try the sweep without anyone on top of you.

Can you move through the entire motion smoothly and effortlessly, all the way to where you want to finish? Or do you hesitate, strain, push off the floor, get stuck halfway, or have to readjust?

If you can’t move yourself effortlessly with nobody resisting you, adding another human isn’t going to fix it.

First, make the movement effortless with no opponent.

Then add a person.

When your body is moving correctly and the energy is being directed toward the destination, they should start to feel almost weightless.

If they still feel heavy, don’t immediately blame their weight, strength or base.

It might not be them getting in the way of your sweep.
It might be you.

The goal isn’t to avoid tapping. The goal is to remove the fear of injury. When you know your partner will control the submission instead of chasing the break, you can relax enough to feel where the space appears, where it disappears, and how to move with it. That’s where Jiu-Jitsu is learned.

If every mistake carries the fear of a broken limb, your brain focuses on survival, not learning.

A good training partner gives you enough control and safety to explore the escape, understand the mechanics, and tap before damage occurs.

A great training partner drops the submission instead of breaking you if you don't realise you are about to be broken, then calmly shows you how you were caught, why you were caught, and how to prevent or escape it next time... that's how the art develops.

Confirm with new people you roll with that nothing will be broken and then enjoy the roll

Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

The way you move can allow energy to flow, or block energy.

A hosepipe that is kinked blocks the flow of water. A body that is kinked blocks the flow of energy.

When you are fighting the energy in your own body, you're doing your opponents job for them.

Most of your struggle in jujitsu is not understanding HOW to move.

The difference between effortless jujitsu and fighting yourself is understanding where you are losing the battle with yourself long before an opponent enters the fray.
