Lifestyle fitness is a term I use to describe a set of goals and desired lifestyle.β£
β£
Itβs what I practice. Itβs what I teach my clients. And itβs what I believe to be the most sustainable approach for most people.β£
β£
If your goal is to compete in a bodybuilding competition, you wouldnβt practice lifestyle fitness.β£
β£
Lifestyle fitness is about looking your best without making huge sacrifices.β£
β£
It means you train hard and eat healthy 90% of the time, but you go out for a drink on the weekends, have dessert once in a while and focus on enjoying your life.β£
β£
Maybe you go on vacation and miss a workout here and there. Itβs okay.β£
β£
The goal is to create balance. To prioritize true health, feel good, have energy.β£
β£
Ultimately itβs about being happy. β£
β£
If you do it right, maybe youβre 10% body fat instead of 7%. Maybe you only gain 7 pounds of muscle per year instead of 10. β£
β£
You look great, but you donβt look insane.β£
β£
But youβre doing the things you want to do. Youβre living the life you want to live.β£
β£
Now the key to lifestyle fitness starts with truly understanding how your body works. This way youβre able to make educated decisions.β£
β£
For example, youβd know that alcohol inhibits protein synthesis, so youβd plan your workouts to have a rest day or just do cardio the day before you drink.β£
β£
Youβd also know to take a vitamin B supplement, drink a lot of water and eat lean protein after drinking to mitigate the damage.β£
β£
Youβd know to cut down on fats and carbs on a day that you have to miss a workout.β£
β£
You understand that every decision to eat unhealthy, drink, stay up late, etc. subtracts from the way you look, but you make those decisions from time to time because theyβre good for your mental health.β£
β£
Lifestyle fitness only works if you have a high degree of awareness about your body and what youβre doing to it. You have to make logical decisions, whether youβre doing something to contribute to your health or take away from it. This means getting educated.β£
β£
You really can have it all. You just have to be smart about how you do it.β£
β£
I went out and had drinks last weekend.β£
β£
Did it kill my physique? Definitely not.β£
β£
When Monday rolled around, I was back in the gym training hard, eating right and getting my sleep.β£
β£
You can make this happen. You just need to learn how.
