I just saw an old club of mine win the Tavs comp but only one player got picked in the Qld U17’s team.

Being coach is more than just warm ups, picking teams, technical advice etc. It’s promotion of your players, talking to QC. Sure some players pick themselves but from experience half don’t.

A cple of years ago We got the Tavs team to the semis and had 4 players picked in the Qld side, 4! These 4 families will never know how much effort went in behind the scenes, I’m talking 1-2 emails per week, phone hook ups, meeting at the games etc. This has given these boys a massive leg up in their cricket journey.

These current players were obviously happy to win the comp but they should expect more from the club and particularly the coach!!

I see a lot of coaches lately getting batsmen to set up with their front foot facing the bowler and their weight on the front foot - this could not be more further from what you should be teaching.

By doing this, The batter will naturally square up and nick off more and more. Not to mention struggle to play the short ball and limit their shot selection.

Frustrates me especially to see parents pay good money only to receive wrong advice.

It still amazes me that some coaches think coaching is all about, time keeping (nets), picking faults in the team’s performance or selecting sides.

A true coach can do more for a player in a 10 minute conversation by providing clarity of their roll, expectations, goals etc.

A true coach will install confidence in their players so that they can go out and express themselves. Back that they can execute what they have trained on.

Very frustrating to see players go out inhibited by their coaches actions or non message.

Here’s the kicker, most coaches in this situation won’t even realise they’re having that effect on their players.
