What a better way to spent your birthday and a milestone one at that, than being on the water with this great bunch and eating cake. Happy Birthday Neville as you continue the week long celebration.

The spoils of a King Island race having won the special draw where those boats with all members onboard went into a draw to win 2 crayfish. Everyone can be a winner it seems.

Grant, it looks like you may need to visit the market to spend up at home now!

Thank you and for a glorious weekend

Grant, Neville, Lucio and Brian are on the King Island Race. What do you do with a 28-ton yacht in a light following breeze? Unauthodox sail plans… to try and pick up as much wind as you can. BWT doesn't perform well with the wind directly behind so creative is being tried to see if they can keep with the fleet. A mixed bag of conditions in the 2023 ORCV Melbourne to Devonport Race and some misfortune with broken gear.

From the start on Friday night, mostly 10-20knot winds from South, then very light variable winds during a transition period late Friday night and early Saturday, before Easterly winds of 10-20knots, followed by another period of very light winds under 5knots Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night the fitting on top furling gear, which holds the genoa (head sail) up, broke with a bang. Quick crew work got the genoa on the deck without any damage to the sail. The top furling gear and genoa halyard were still at the top of the mast.

We hoisted the genoa back up on a spinnaker halyard but had restricted sail options as we could no longer furl the genoa to reduce sail or tack. Fortunately we only needed to do one tack which was accomplished via a 270 degree gybe and whenever full genoa was too much sail in stronger wind, we nursed it by not sailing as hard on and sacrificing VMG.

Lucio went up the mast in the second light wind patch, just before dark on Saturday night, to bring the broken furling gear down so we could replace the the broken fitting and re-hoist the genoa on the furling gear.

We now have 10-15 knot North Easterly winds. Glorious conditions and are less than an hour from the Devonport finish
