It’s State Championships week at Dorset! 🎯

The 2026 Field & Game Australia Tasmanian State Championships, sponsored by Sports Hut Launceston , are on this weekend, and we’re looking forward to welcoming some familiar faces and visitors for an epic two days of clay shooting.

Don’t let “State Championships” make you think this one’s only for the top shots. Competitors of all experience levels and abilities are welcome, with prizes for the top three in every grade!

You don’t need to be an FGA member to take part. Just like our regular events, all licensed competitors are welcome to come along and join us.

We’ll accept registrations on the day, so just make sure you arrive with plenty of time to spare. Registering beforehand helps our volunteers plan the weekend and gets you through the office a little quicker. Remember to bring your fi****ms licence along too!

Great to see club Life Member Dennis Bushby, aka “Prez”, back down at the club over the weekend!

Here he is catching up with fellow Life Member and our Club Treasurer, Shane Summers.

We also squeezed in a little committee meeting and got a few more updates underway around the kitchen and clubhouse as we continue getting everything ready for the Sports Hut FGA Tasmanian State Championships next month.

🏆 2026 FGA TASMANIAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 🏆

19th & 20th September | Dorset Field & Game

We’re very excited to be hosting the 2026 Field & Game Australia Tasmanian State Championships at Dorset Field & Game next month, proudly sponsored by Sports Hut Launceston .

Across the weekend, competitors will take on 150 targets as we crown this year’s Tasmanian State Champion.

📅 Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September
🎯 150 Targets
💰 Adults: $150
💰 Juniors: $50

Most importantly, all licensed shooters are welcome to compete. You do not need to be a member of FGA or Dorset Field & Game to come along and enjoy the weekend.

FGA members will be eligible for the official Grade and Category prizes, while non-members will compete for our Visitor prize.

Grades: AA, A, B & C
Categories: Open, Juniors & Visitors

A huge thank you to Sports Hut for getting behind this year’s State Championships. They do an enormous amount for the sport shooting, hunting and outdoor community here in Tasmania, and it’s a pleasure to have them on board supporting another major event at Dorset.

🏆 Dorset Field & Game Club Championship Update

In case you missed yesterday’s announcement, ClayHQ has now added a Club Championship builder to its platform.

Clubs running their own championships can now set everything up through ClayHQ, with the system doing the hard work behind the scenes and providing an up-to-date public leaderboard for competitors to follow throughout the season.

Our Club Secretary, who also happens to be the man behind ClayHQ, built this tool to save time for our club. It has since grown into something that can help reduce the workload for club volunteers and administrators everywhere, while giving competitors another way to follow their progress and stay engaged. More engagement means more interest, more conversation and ultimately more exposure for our sport!

Our Club Championship is based on our monthly Field & Game Australia - Australian Simulated Field events.

Each competitor’s best 20 rounds from January through to November make up their qualifying score. The December event is then our Grand Finale, where every score counts towards the final result.

To be eligible, competitors must:

• Be a financial member of Dorset Field & Game
• Compete in at least five qualifying events
• Compete in the December Grand Finale

We’ve shared the current Top 10 below, but there is still plenty of shooting left and plenty of opportunity for the leaderboard to change!

What a day at Dorset!

We were treated to absolutely perfect winter weather on Sunday for the Trevor Curtis Memorial, and a massive 90 competitors joined us for the day, making it our biggest August turnout on record. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces, along with a wonderful number of new ones around the club.

There was some seriously good shooting across the grounds too, highlighted by Nick Brown taking High Gun with an outstanding 99/100, equalling the Dorset Field & Game club record. Nick opened with three perfect 25s and went into the final round with the 100 very much alive.

The one that got away? A rabbit in the final round.

Some say it’s still out there somewhere, living its best life. 🐇😂

Nick’s 99 headed an incredibly strong day of shooting, with 13 perfect rounds recorded across the event and some amazingly tight results throughout the grades and categories.

And, of course, the day is held in memory of Trevor Curtis. It was wonderful to see such a large field turn out for the memorial and enjoy the grounds, the competition and the company. We hope it was a fitting day in Trevor’s memory.

As always, these days don’t happen without plenty going on behind the scenes. A big thank you to Balinda in the kitchen, our crew in the office, everyone who helped around the grounds and all those who pitched in throughout the day.

And a special mention must go to our clay targets, which somehow managed to make it through all 90 competitors. A tremendous achievement given recent events. 😂

Most importantly, thank you to every single person who came along. 90 competitors in August is an incredible turnout and seeing so many new faces enjoying Dorset was probably the best part of the day.

A huge thank you to Ashley Summers from Tassie Road Doctor, who has been out at the club this week giving our driveway and internal road a much-needed grade.

And what a difference it has made! 👌

Ash has done a marvellous job tidying everything up and getting the road back into great shape, and we really appreciate him giving us a hand.

For those playing along at home, Ash is the brother of our Treasurer and Range Officer, Shane Summers, and uncle of former Secretary and now highly decorated AFL Senior Coach Lee Summers.

So after careful consideration, we can confidently say Ashley is currently leading the race for Best Summers. Sorry Shane and Lee.

Jokes aside, we highly recommend Ash and Tassie Road Doctor!

If your driveway, private road, internal access road or similar is looking a little worse for wear and could do with some attention, give Ash a call. He does a fantastic job and, as you can see from the before and after photos, the results speak for themselves.

We’re back at it again this Sunday at Dorset Field & Game, and this month sees the return of the Trevor Curtis Memorial, with a huge thank you to Sandy Gibson on sponsoring the event.

After being moved from last month, we’re looking forward to finally getting this one underway and enjoying another great day of shooting in memory of Trevor.

As usual, we’ll have 100 Targets of Australian Simulated Field, with Shane and the crew no doubt having a few interesting targets waiting around the grounds. Hopefully just enough to keep everyone honest! 😅

Whether you’re a regular at Dorset, haven’t been for a while, or you’ve never shot with us before, you’re more than welcome to come along. Visitors are always encouraged, and we’d love to see another great field this month.

Only a handful of spots remain for the 2026 Dorset Classic!

With just 15 places left, now is the time to lock in your spot for one of our biggest and most enjoyable events of the year.

Held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November, the Dorset Classic features two full days of Old School Sim Field, with 100 targets each day.

The format includes:

▫️8 grounds
▫️4 stands per ground
▫️25 targets per ground
▫️200 targets across the weekend

It is a well organised and structured, social and incredibly fun format that offers something for everyone, whether you are an experienced competitor or simply looking to enjoy a great weekend of shooting.

There will be loads of prizes up for grabs, a coffee van on site, a fully stocked canteen and plenty of great company across the two days.

Last year’s event sold out well before the event date, and registrations are already heading the same way again this year.
