Baseball batting cage - Redcliffe, Brisbane Northside

The client has 2 young children who are both mad keen on Baseball. He contacted Premier Cricket Net Construction to install a Baseball batting (and pitching) cage inside the 6m x 6m shed on his Brisbane Northside property.

Fixing plates were utilised to attach the tensioned (net) supporting cables. The nets were placed 300mm away from the shed walls to prevent the balls from impacting the sides of the shed and the netting was placed under tension to reduce the amount of flex in the nets (thereby reducing the chances of balls impacting the shed walls). A full roof net was also required to prevent balls from leaving the enclosure.

The nets were manufactured with a heavy bottom rope and a 6mm rope was sewn to the rest of the perimeter. All nets were custom fitted onsite (cut to size and sewn) to the supporting wire cables.

Additionally, the client specifically requested that the front of the batting cage have the ability for the netting to retract (open) so that the boys could practice their pitching from the driveway section located outside of the shed.

The installation was completed in a single day.

Baseball versus Cricket

The demands of the sport also dictated the type of netting we used:

• In Cricket, the ball is (generally) played into the ground first, which absorbs some of the force of the ball, before it hits the netting - a 48 ply sports grade netting is used

• In Baseball, the ball is (generally) hit directly into the upper sections of the netting - a heavier 60 ply netting was used is as it is more durable and therefore more suited to the demands of Baseball

Oops it's Saturday already - here is Friday answer to 'RANDOM RULE TUESDAY'

Option 1. Quickly remake the wickets and place a bail or both bails on top of the stumps – removing one of the bails is sufficient to effect a run out.

Option 2. Replace one of the stumps and with one hand place the ball against the stump while pulling the stump out with the other hand (ball must remain in contact with the stump at all times).

Option 3. Replace one stump and using the hand or arm of the hand holding the ball, strike the stump completely out of the ground (a stump left leaning over but still in the ground is not out).

Option 4. Replace one stump. Any fielder may execute a direct hit which completely removes the stump (a stump left leaning over but still in the ground is not out - there has been instances where this has occurred).

Friday answer to 'RANDOM RULE TUESDAY'

In this case, the ball should continue to be used. Although the weight of a cricket ball is generally accepted as being 156 grams, the laws of cricket actually allow for a weight range of between 155.9 grams to 163 grams. Since the ball in this instance weighs 163 grams, it is within the acceptable parameters, therefore will continue to be used. If the ball is not swinging, then it is likely due to other factors and not the weight of the ball. Well done to Tyler who correctly identified the correct ball weights.

Friday answer to 'RANDOM RULE TUESDAY'

In October 2010 the hit wicket rule was changed to allow for this scenario – If a piece of your bat breaks off and hits the wicket you will now be given out “hit wicket”.

A PIECE OF AUSTRALIAN CRICKET HISTORY!

Regular “STEEDEN” brand cricket balls right? Not quite! Look closer at the printing - see the words “Queensland Australia” - these are leather cricket balls which were made in Manly, Queensland by the original 'Steeden’ brothers prior to the company being sold to Gray-Nicholls in 1983.

The balls in this photo are at least 40 years old and in their original packaging - this set of six is one of only 3 sets still remaining.

We are currently coaching the grandson of one of the Steeden brothers and his father kindly brought the balls in for us to look at.

This is a piece of Australian cricketing history and it was a massive privilege to be able to see balls of this quality, in this condition and still in their original packaging.

We love this stuff and it is just one of the reasons why we do what we do.
