The Howse family have sadly asked that the ACT Bowls Community, in particular the former members of Canberra City Bowling Club, be informed of Bob’s passing, at the age of 80, early on Boxing Day after a long battle with dementia. Bob was a member of Canberra City Bowling Club from 1982 until 2011 when he and Marja retired to the Gold Coast. Bob held numerous committee positions with Canberra City Bowling Club, including that of President. Bob will not be having a funeral service, in typical fashion Bob has donated his body to science. A notice will be published in the Canberra Times. Vale Bob Howse.

Our former member Pam Armour passed away on Tuesday 21 December 2021.

Pam’s notice will be in the Canberra Times for Wednesday 29 December 2021 and Saturday 1 January 2022.

The graveside service to celebrate Pam’s life will be held at the Woden Cemetery, Justinian St, Phillip ACT, at 10 am on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Loving wife of Hector McCauley (dec) and Ian Armour (dec).

Wonderful grandmother of Matthew, Rachel, Lauren, Ben, James, Sam, Peter, Alana, and Patrick; and step-grandmother to Janis, Mara, Charlie, and Chloe; and proud great-grandmother to 15.

Forever in our hearts. We will miss you.

Canberra City may no longer exist in a physical sense but its spirit lives on.

Congratulations to Charles Smith, Graham Read, David Lalor and Cliff Gilbert on winning their Final against Weston Creek in the Bowls ACT 60+ Fours 2021 Championship held today.

Although now playing at different Bowling Clubs a change in Bowls ACT Championship rules to allow composite teams from affiliate clubs provided the opportunity for the former City boys to team up again and emulate their 2015 and 2016 wins in this event.

Many thanks to the Weston Creek Bowling Club for hosting this event.

They have may joined and embraced the Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Bowling Club following the demise of their beloved 90 Year Old Canberra City Bowling Club but these ladies have maintained their friendship and competitiveness featuring in the QRSL's 2020 Ladies Pairs Championship Final today. Congratulations to Sue Lalor (Skip) and Lexie Webster (Lead) for their come from behind win against Ruth Moore and Karen James. The game was played in very wet conditions and was poised at 18 All with the last end to play. Sue and Lexie picked up two shots to win 20 to 18.

A big thank you to the QRSL for making so many of the former Canberra City bowlers welcome at their new home.

CITY SOARS FROM THE ASHES!
In the last ever match in City colours, our champion triples team of Sue Lalor, Karen James and Ruth Moore convincingly won Bowls ACT Champion of Champions Triples final over Tuggeranong at Canberra North this morning. Congratulations girls. But it didn't stop there! Our former City boys, Tony Barry, Benny Hill and Rob Kelly secured the men's title for Canberra North in a last end nail biter over Canberra. Congrats to our former City boys. GO CITY.

Who would have ever thought that this day would mark the final day of the Canberra City Bowling Club's (CCBC) existence as an affiliate of the Bowls ACT family.

While we acknowledge the viability of bowling clubs in the ACT has always been tenuous, we feel incredibly let down by the Ainslie Football and Social Club (Ainslie Group) for reneging on its agreement to establish CCBC bowling greens at Gungahlin.

Sadly, we have witnessed first-hand the power of big business over community. The Ainslie Group's harsh treatment of one of its own internal sporting clubs suggests it has lost sight of why it really exists: to serve their community and sporting clubs.

One can only wonder where the funds the Ainslie Group had set aside for the Gungahlin bowling greens project will now be diverted and how it can publicly justify the now wasted and substantial financial resources, time and effort spent in bringing this project to fruition only to jettison it at the 11th hour?

Yes, it has been a difficult and unsettling time for CCBC members, who have fought tirelessly to keep the 90 year old Club intact and retain its long, proud and successful history in the national capital.

Our community is broken but our bonds will last forever.
