Profile of Sensei Mark Szalajko, who teaches in Smeaton Grange (Sydney)

Mark Szalajko is a dedicated practitioner of traditional Shotokan karate, holding the rank of Godan (5th Dan) under the Japan Karate Association (JKA). His karate journey is rooted in a deep respect for the classical methods established by Gichin Funakoshi and carried forward through the JKA’s globally recognised system of instruction.

As the Director of Bujutsu Martial Arts and Fitness Centre, a full-time dojo based in Sydney, Mark is committed to preserving and teaching authentic karate. His dojo provides a structured environment where students can develop strong fundamentals while embracing the deeper values of traditional martial arts.

Mark trains regularly in Japan, ensuring his karate remains aligned with the highest JKA standards. This ongoing connection to the source of Shotokan karate allows him to refine his technique and bring back authentic knowledge and experience to his students.

What a great in-house tournament we had last night! 🥋🏆
Well done to all our students who participated. It was an excellent opportunity for everyone to get more tournament experience and show off what we learn.

Over the weekend, we had 5 students enter the 2026 Karate Queensland State Titles! 🥋

It was an excellent event and all our students did extremely well. Everyone’s efforts are to be commended! Thank you to Sensei Michael for coaching and supporting everyone on the day.

This weekend, some of our members went down to Sydney for a seminar with Shiina Sensei (8th Dan) from JKA HQ. It was a great seminar hosted by Bujutsu Martial Arts Smeaton Grange. Lots of great training sessions and expert knowledge.
