Garry McIntosh. Refused to play AFL. He Could have been a AFL star and played 200+ games But refused to cross from the SANFL playing 371 SANFL games. Loyal Legend.
Garry was one of the greats to play SANFL. When the AFL clubs came knocking he would decline and stay at the Redlegs

He was one of the blokes you wanted on your side. Hard but fair, played for his Teamates and had a lot of success

Two SANFL Premierships in 82 and 84 as well as two best and fairest for Norwood. He was skipper of the redlegs for 8 years and in that time also won the ultimate individual honour the Magarey medal twice.

Back in 1982 North Melbourne Drafted Garry but he refused to go and stayed loyal to the Redlegs.
Over the years many AFL clubs made offers but he knocked them all back

Through an era when South Australian Football was full of stars, macca would play 12 games for South Australia and be best on ground in 3 of those 12 times winning the Fos Williams medal.
State footy was at its peak at this time and Garry outplayed many of the Victorians each year.

Macca would later be inducted into the Norwood hall of fame as a legend and be selected in the team of the century.

In 2021, McIntosh was nominated for induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame but declined because, according to the Hall of Fame selection chair Richard Goyder, "he did not play the game for personal honours".

This just shows the type of character Macca was. Loyal and with a team first mentally, he will go down as one of the greats of Australian Football.
In total Garry would play 371 SANFL games an amazing feat in itself.

Macca, Thank you for all you gave to SANFL Footy, it’s a great reminder of how many players we had in the VFA, SANFL & WAFL who could have been greats in the AFL if they crossed.

Port Adelaide’s new Unique Heritage jumper has been released with White sleeves. It’s a unique one for the fact Port Adelaide always wore the black prison bars but back in time when uniforms aren’t as much about looking as fashionable as they are today they wore the white sleeves. They will wear the jumper in the AFL in a few weeks.

The jumper was photo matched with old historic Photos of Port Adelaide’s successful era.

It’s a great tribute to history Port stuck with the white sleeves and will be a sought after jumper.

Hugo Hall Kahan was one minute working as model, 9 days later he made his AFL Debut last night for Adelaide Football Club Hugo lived out his dream of a AFL Debut last night vs Geelong at Adelaide Oval.

The journey to get there is a long and winding road. From East Sandringham JFC the junior club of Shane Warne onto playing TAC Cup at Sandringham Dragons then drafted by Sydney Swans in the AFL.

Things didn’t work out in Sydney after 2 years & Hugo returned home to Melbourne contemplating if the AFL dream was over.
He played for Sandringham Zebras in the VFL in 2024 and over that year was one of the Zebras better players.

The invite to join Williamstown Football Club in the VFL was too good to refuse. Williamstown are a standalone club meaning no AFL players dropping down like he had at the time at Sandringham with St Kilda players dropping down taking VFL spots.

In the background Hugo was helping out a mate with some modelling and working as a Graphic Designer.

Finally destiny was in Hugo’s hands and he grabbed the Williamstown opportunity with both hands.

In the 27 games Hugo pulled on the Williamstown jumper he was in the best players in 11 of the games.

As the AFL mid season draft Rolled around Hugo’s name was thrown around as a chance but like every year 40+ names are thrown up as draft possibilities and less than a handful get an opportunity.

This year the VFL hit the jackpot with 11 VFL listed players drafted and Hugo was one of those 11.

As he Waltzed around Adelaide oval last night for his debut it’s easy to forget the road less traveled Hugo has taken to get to the point of a AFL debut.

From rejection after rejection, from times he thought the opportunity may never come to a Monster crowd at Adelaide Oval on prime time TV making a AFL debut.

Last night Hugo had 16 disposals and played with that attack and confidence he is known to play with.

Hugo dared to dream and last night he was given his reward. Congratulations Hugo. You give hope to every player not drafted that there’s still a way to make it, you just have to believe in yourself.

From VFL listed player to AFL Debut in 9 days! Mitch Podhajski has had an amazing few days and it gets even better as he makes his AFL debut for Collingwood vs Melbourne for the massive sold out Kings Birthday game.

The Former Coburg Forward has been brilliant since moving forward. He will play in a Collingwood forward line needing some X factor to keep their season alive.

It’s an amazing footy story and reminder for all VFL listed players to stick with it for as long as you can playing VFL because at 27 Mitch Podhajski will love his dream Monday.

James Podsiadly - Never gave up. Drafted at 28. AFL Premiership player at 30. One of the great perseverance story’s from the VFL. James Podsiadly made his AFL debut the unconventional way.

With Mitch Podhajski drafted by Collingwood at 27 years old as a forward it takes many people back to the original mature age success story.

The original Shaun Mannagh story is playing itseif. Werribee to Geelong and a chance at a AFL premiership.

James Podsiadly came through the Western Jets FC Tac cup team and was rewarded being picked up by Essendon in the 1999 draft. With the all conquering bombers winning the 2000 AFL premiership, Podsiadly didn’t get a opportunity to get into the AFL side and was delisted. Collingwood swooped and Picked him up in the rookie draft. He was Given a few opportunities in the Wizard Cup and eventually found himself at Williamstown playing VFL going on to win the clubs leading Goal kicking award.

Having been delisted by Collingwood, he decided to stay with the VFL and signed with Werribee. Between 03-08 Podsiadly would win two of the VFL’s biggest accolades the Frosty Miller medal and the Liston medal.

By 2008 James Podsiadly was 28 and to most the chance of ever making a AFL list was long gone. Looking at life after playing footy he took up a role at Geelong VFL as a fitness coach as well as playing VFL.

Geelong AFL seen something in the 28 year old and with them firmly in the premiership window took a punt on the 28 year old and picked him up in the AFL draft.
2011 would go in to be one of the best individual years by James Podsiadly. 52 AFL goals and achieving a Dream which was playing in a AFL premiership. 3 years earlier Geelong took a punt on a 28 year old was now a James Podsiadly is Geelong AFL premiership player!

It’s a message to all the current VFL listed players. Never give up, and always try and play at the highest level you can because you never know what can happen in a short space of time and you can be on a AFL list.

Well done on a great Career James Podsiadly and well done for never giving up on a AFL dream,

James Podsiadly

The Train to the footy. Where did your train trip start and end to go to the footy? Catching the Train to the VFL, VFA or AFL has been a tradition for well over a century and in Melbourne we were lucky all the footy grounds had a Train Station Nearby except Waverley.

From the most common stations of Richmond & Jollimont for a MCG, to the footy grounds like Glenferrie Station were the train almost stopped on the outer wing!

Trains and footy have went hand in hand for years, from the Red Rattlers to the fancy trains of today the trains have got us all to games right around Melbourne and not forgetting Geelong for their fancy country trains.

Long before South Melbourne moved to Sydney you could catch a train to Albert Park and to a Port Melbourne VFA game you could catch the train to North Port. The trains to St Kilda & Port Melbourne ended in 1987 but were replaced with trams.

Catching a train & bus to Waverley Park was like a holiday expedition if you lived in the North or west.
2 trains and finally a bus from huntingdale to Waverley.

Who could ever forget the trip home after the game when fans would meet at flinders street to share the scores of all the games being played around Melbourne. Back then there was no internet and unless you had a radio nobody knew the VFL AFL scores.

The train has been apart of our lives to the footy even more these days with less parking available at grounds meaning the best option is the train.

If you’ve got this far what’s your train story? How’d you get to games? What’s your most memorable trip and what was your favourite away train trip.

Long live Footy and trains.

Mark Jackson “I’m an individual”. 82 Games 308 goals. Cult figure of the AFL. 3 Time club leading goalkicker. Footy is Often forgotten it’s a game we watch to forget about lives for few hours. Mark was one of the great people that made watching footy fun.

When we talk about going to the footy and genuinely not knowing what was going to happen, in the 80’s if you went to Mark Jackson play you genuinely had no idea if he’d kick 10 goals give a opposition player a kill or do a handstand in the of the ground while a game was on.

In the modern world of football where players are focused on not wanting to attract attention and saying the same generic answers at Press conferences back in the early 80’s a player broke the mould and that was Mark Jackson

Jacko played just 82 VFL (Now AFL) games for 3 clubs over 6 years. It’s 4 clubs over 7 years if you include Richmond where Jacko played u19’s and reserves but never got a senior game

In his first season in 1981 Jacko kicked 76 goals and just 28 behinds. He was a very accurate kick in front of goal. In 1982 Jacko once again kicked 76 goals and this time only 27 behinds.

Jacko was doing great in a struggling team and at the end of 82 moved to St Kilda where he played 10 games and kicked 41 goals the season ended abruptly for Jacko and he ended up playing Rugby Union for the rest of the year.

In 83 Jacko headed down to Geelong and kicked 74 goals in his first year with 9 on debut vs Fitzroy. Jacko played 84 and the start of 1985 at Geelong and that was it at AFL level at just 27.

It was in 1985 that Jacko released his hit song I’m an individual which peaked at 15 in the music charts.

in 1986 signing for Brunswick in the VFA and pulling in a big crowd of 15,000+ for the first game at home

Jacko was only held goalless once in his career. A amazing stat not many can match.

Jacko went on to have some fun as a actor and be the face of the energiser batteries ad’s on TV

Behind all the jokes and fun was a genuinely good footballer who when in the zone was extremely hard to beat.
Thank you Mark Jackson for everything you gave to football.

The State Of Origin Div 12 Ressies game returns this weekend in Adelaide at Norwood Oval in what is one of the big games on the footy calendar.
A crowd of over 5,000 packed out Norwood Oval last year as the All Stars took on South Australia with a big contingent of Ex AFL players.

This year is set to be even bigger with a plethora of ex AFL players set to line up in the game including two time Norm Smith Medalist Andrew McLeod, 200+ AFL gamer Charlie Dixon, VFL Liston medal winner & 194 AFL game player Jarryd Lyons, Jay Schultz , Daniel Motlop, Jesse White, Matt Broadbent & Australian Cricketers Callum Ferguson & Mark Cosgrove.

All your favourites like the Marmalade AUS boys, Former Footy Grounds - Andy Munro, Jim Brady, the Knightmare Matthew Knight, Caden MacDonald Jp Drake plus many many more legends.

The game was the brainchild of Checkers and Matty Knightmare knight as a way to help struggling local football clubs by coming together to help the community.

This year is the 5th year of the game and is set to be the biggest with record viewers on the stream last year, if you can’t make it to the game this year it will be live streamed again.

It all kicks off at 7PM at a Norwood oval in Adelaide which hosts AFL games in Gather Round.

This year the game takes a new theme with Victoria replacing the All Stars making it a state of origin Classic.

Brad from VFL Rewind will pull on the Boots for Victoria. It’s a great fun game to watch with lots of fun and laughs.

Well done to Marmalade and KOTNmedia who put the game on the Magnificent each year.

Robert Harvey - 383 games. 2 Brownlow Medals. 8 time All Australian. 4 St Kilda BNF’s. Legend of our game.

It’s pretty amazing to think Robert Harvey’s football career lasted 20 years. From 1988-2008 and 383 games Robert pulled on the Saints jumper with pride.

Roberts career went full circle. When he stared in 88 it was less professional. By the time he finished in 2008 the league was elite.

97 & 98 were the big years individually winning the Brownlow but even in his last year in 2008 Robert still had 500+ disposals for the season. Truly phenomenal effort

Harvey was consistent to say the least. 8 times he was selected in the all Australian team and also won 4 St Kilda Best and Fairest’s

In the history of the club Robert Harvey will go down as one of the greatest ever to pull on a Saints jumper.

Named in the St Kilda team of the century and legend in the saints hall of fame.

Roberts fitness standards throughout his career set him apart from the rest. He was always challenging himself.
He had 40+ disposals 12 times, he knew how to find the footy.

Well done on an amazing career Robert, your were respected by all footy fans for the way you went about it.
