Gymwatch Australia

Gymwatch Australia Tired of health clubs and gym chains not fulfilling their promises? Gym Watch keeps them honest! Acc Why is this so? What to do? Absolutely! Don’t hold back!

Having been in the Fitness and Allied Health industries since 1982, much has changed - however many aspects have remained the same. Sadly, less than 8% of the adult population are actively engaged in commercial fitness activities, with over 50% of the western population classified as obese. There are many reasons, not the least of which is the dramatic increase in the availability of low nutrient,

high calorie “fast food”. The Health Club or more generally, the Business of Fitness does not appear to have learned much and hence offered little or no solutions to this escalating public health crisis. It is my belief that primarily, the consumer needs to be better educated. They simply do not know what they need and what outcomes to expect when they join most commercial fitness facilities (for simplicity, let’s call them “Gyms”). Invariably, there is little or no physiological evaluation other than an “arse covering” pre-exercise questionnaire! Gym marketing is predictably price based and not OUTCOME based. The #1 complaint I encounter is that none of the Gym staff has properly shown the new member how to use the important/relevant pieces of equipment and/or the effective free-weight and bodyweight exercises. The “programming” is usually directed to the ubiquitous Personal Trainer, the qualifications of whom and more importantly, their industry experience is inadequate at best. Gym users then become disillusioned; cease to attend the facility and a lasting positive outcome not achieved. GymWatch was founded to help change this bad industry habit. Your local gyms will be evaluated based on standard criteria I have developed using my vast experience in not only the operation of fitness businesses, but the selection of appropriate equipment and wide ranging science based exercise programming to offer effective, habit forming outcomes for the broadest demographic possible. Sounds like good business practice for the gym industry? But most of them just don’t get it…

So, please share your experiences – good and bad – by posting a comment. I will be posting accurate and objective assessments of the local Southern Highland gyms; from Tahmoor to Moss Vale, NSW. Progressively, the national gym chains will be evaluated and ultimately all relevant fitness facilities will be reviewed. You will know what questions to ask and be much more prepared to evaluate the suitability of each gym for your own desired outcomes. My accompanying website, www.gymwatch.com.au will be live very soon. I’ll keep you updated with the progress. The site will not only offer accurate, science based reviews on your local gyms, but will feature a vast array of up-to-date information on optimal nutrition strategies, effective, brief strength training programmes and time efficient interval training options. GymWatch will be a game changer (sorry Dominoes!....haha), hence ultimately encouraging the Fitness Industry to lift their respective gameplay. A true WIN – WIN for everyone!

This article is gold! Should be read by everyone, especially "fitness professionals". Loved the description of Paleo as becoming a sort of snooty food-religion, much like veganism. Hello.. Pete Evans?

We ask our experts what training method or diet trend is the most overrated. They don't hold back. Let the butt-hurt begin.

Ladies, please take note.

A recent study shows that training to failure is the true key to muscle growth... regardless of the weight used. If your goal is size, this is a must-read.

I wonder when the fitness industry will get this message? Why do so many large health clubs have rows and rows of treadmills? They are expensive, high maintenance and take up a huge amount of floor area. Surely, the economics of the truth would be of interest to usually tight-fisted gym owners! I guess it's a matter of truly providing what your members need - not what they THINK they need.

My old mate, Bryon Holmes on the incredible MedX Lumbar Extension Machine. why don't physios have these in Australia? They receive the same fee by using non-exercise based rehabilitation techniques - that is, methods that don't work!

Warning bells should sound loudly when a price based marketing exercise such as this example is advertised heavily in your locality. There are only two reasons a health club will utilise one of the many parasitic "sales boosting" organisations; 1) Due to poor management and service, the business is floundering. 2) Either an owner is planning on selling the business, so increased sales/members will help the sale price or a new owner has discovered critical cashflow issues and needs the money.

A call to the Highlands Health Club was handled by an ill-trained marketing company (more this below) contractor - she started less than a week ago. Notwithstanding the nervous and stumbling handling of the call, the young lady finally admitted that the $10.95 per week only allows access between 11;00am to 4:00pm each week day. OK... expected, however the discount on the flyer (SAVE $452) is based on signing a direct debit contract for THREE years! This odious condition was NOT mentioned! I was also advised that their was a new owner and "she needed to pump up the membership". Thanks for telling me!

Upon further investigation, I was advised that the company behind the "marketing campaign" is Creative Fitness Marketing, an infamous, parasitic membership drive organisation. Their modus operandi is to pump up the immediate cash flow, take a massive commission and then leave the gym with a huge member and hence, cashflow drought for the next 12 months or so. Often the Health Club closes with the obvious ramifications as a result.

I believe that this flyer is astoundingly misleading, with a complaint soon to be filed with the NSW Dept of Fair Trading. The public (and the gym owners) should be protected from these scams. No one wins except CFM.

I guess as with all things in consumer law... buyer beware!

An obvious example of everything that is WRONG with powerlifting - all the support gear. Those ludicrous specially-designed suits, shirts, briefs, belts, and wraps collectively might improve a lifter's otherwise unaided lifts by as much as 50%! Eric Spoto's unaided RAW bench of 722lb is far more admirable. Even more impressive is the young paraplegic lifter in the previous post, benching 301kg - unracking the bar and racking it HIMSELF.

In my view, if you can't dress yourself before a lift and someone has to PUSH your hands down to grip the bar, then something is clearly f**ked up. RAW power lifting is the ONLY way forward!
