Ego Isn't the Enemy!

In yoga, the ego is often misunderstood.

The Sanskrit word is Ahaṅkāra - literally the "I-maker." It is the part of us that forms an identity and helps us navigate the world. It allows us to say, "I am a mother," "I am a teacher," "I am a swimmer," "I am Rebel."

Without some sense of self, we couldn't function in daily life.

The problem isn't the ego itself. The problem begins when we mistake our identity for the whole of who we are.

When we become completely identified with our roles, achievements, beliefs, appearance, successes, or failures, we can lose touch with something deeper.

Yoga invites us to observe the ego rather than be ruled by it. To recognise that our identities are useful, but they are not the entirety of who we are.

I am a yoga teacher. I am a naturopath. I am a wife, a friend, and many other things besides.

But beneath all of those roles is the simple awareness that witnesses them all.

For me, yoga is not about getting rid of the ego. It is about putting it in its rightful place and remembering that we are more than the stories we tell about ourselves.

A Winter Yin Yoga WORKSHOP

Feeling stressed, stiff, tired, or just in need of a reset?

This 90-minute Yin Yoga workshop is for ALL bodies - tight, tired, athletic, ageing, injured, or just plain busy. No experience or flexibility needed. ✨

Yin Yoga is a slow, supported practice using long-held poses that may help you feel calmer, more relaxed, and more aware of your body. It's a gentle invitation to soften and unwind.

Winter is the season of the Water element - traditionally a time for rest and conserving energy. This sequence focuses on areas like the spine, hips, legs and lower back, with the aim of supporting relaxation and ease of movement.

Just like water finds its way through the smallest spaces, Yin invites the body to soften gradually, at its own pace.

No performance. No pushing. Just stillness, and permission to rest. 🤍

I saw this shared by Arundhati Baitmangalkar today, and I really like it...

"May you find yoga. May yoga find you."

Two directions of the same truth - sometimes we go looking for the practice, and sometimes the practice arrives exactly when we need it, often disguised as something else entirely.

However it found you - through injury, through stillness, through curiosity, through crisis - may it keep finding you, again and again, for as long as you need it.

The pose is not the point. ✨

Yoga has never actually been about the postures.
They're not the goal - they're the means to it.

A vehicle for something deeper, not the destination itself.

You can be in a beautiful shape and still be a thousand miles away...

▪️Thinking about your to-do list.
▪️Comparing yourself to the mat next to you.
▪️Criticizing your body.
▪️Waiting for the next pose to arrive.

🕉The quiet moments where yoga actually begins...

→ You notice your shoulders gripping before anyone tells you to soften.
→ You realize you're holding your breath.
→ You catch yourself making it about impressing instead of feeling.
→ You feel the difference between pushing and listening.

🧘🏼‍♂️That's the practice.

A forward fold becomes a mirror for how you meet surrender.
A plank becomes a mirror for how you meet effort.
A twist shows you what's compressed - and what's asking for space.

Even sitting still can be the practice, if you're paying attention to how you're present.

⚜️The posture is just the vehicle!

💠Awareness is the destination.

The postures give you something to focus on - but the practice is what happens when you're awake enough to notice yourself inside it. 🤍
