Understanding the context in which a technique was designed to be used is crucial.
Not every technique will work in every situation, and not every situation will allow you to apply a technique exactly as you have practised it within the controlled environment of the Dōjō. True understanding lies in developing the ability to discern when, where, why, and how to apply what you have learned.
A common failure among martial artists who attempt to “prove” their art against others is a lack of understanding of this principle. They try to reproduce techniques exactly as they practise them in the Dōjō, expecting the same form to function regardless of circumstance. When it fails, they often blame the technique rather than recognise their own inability to adapt.
Quite simply, this comes from being dangerously trapped within form and, in some cases, blindly conditioned by one’s training.
Kata and techniques are not merely fixed movements to be copied. They are vehicles for transmitting principles, strategies, timing, distance, positioning, balance, and intention. Their purpose is not to imprison the practitioner within form, but to provide the foundation from which the practitioner can eventually move freely beyond it.
To remain dependent upon the outward shape of a technique is to have missed what the technique was trying to teach.
True Budō requires the ability to recognise the reality of the moment, adapt accordingly, and transcend form without abandoning the principles that gave birth to it.
