Vale Ernie Parkinson, Valued Life Member of Bindoon & Districts Bowling Club

Members, friends and past members of the Bindoon and Districts Bowling Club wish to express their sincere condolences to daughter, Maree, and the extended family of Mr Ernie Parkinson, Life Member, on his recent passing. A gentleman both on and off the bowling green Ernie was almost a permanent fixture as one of our longest serving members still involved with the club, almost fifty years in fact. Ernie has been involved in many facets of the club including the original development of Chinkabee Complex, multiple busy bees around the greens, tending to the gardens with his beloved Pat around the club, washing dishes at Ladies’ Gala Days, putting in reticulation and even growing vegies along Rink 1 to the benefit of club members (his pumpkins were a sight to behold!). Who can forget the Chocolate Wheel spun on the back of his truck at the annual Bindoon Agricultural Show!

Best remembered as a solid lead in his later years, Ernie was still bowling at the ripe old age of 94 when he won his last club championship just last year in the Margaret Martin Mixed Triples – some 43 years after his first trophy in the Men’s Club Fours, an event he went on to win another eight times! Throw in a men’s pairs and three men’s triples championships, four-time winner of the Gil Thompson Memorial Mixed Fours and King of Scroungers in 1991 and 2001, we can deduce Ernie was a pretty handy lawn bowler! His last pennant flag in 2011/2012 was definitely well earned. Two Moore District League Men’s Triples crowns were also not to be sneezed at in 1986/87 and 1989/90.
Ernie loved a chat as he watched our members play pennants and championships when he could no longer play himself. He didn’t mind a small tipple of red wine after bowling or watching bowls as it was only a short walk home afterwards, or in later years a very short ride on his mobility scooter as it was a bonus living on the club’s doorstep!

We will miss his loud and hearty life, his gentle tone and his competitive edge. We were so blessed to have such a wonderful member of our community in our midst as he is now reunited with his beloved Pat. Always loved and remembered fondly.

To members current and past, please join us next Saturday 11th July from 11am at Chinkabee Complex for Ernie’s Memorial as we share our memories with Ernie’s family and friends and celebrate a magnificent life and its impact on our Bindoon community. Please get in touch with Heather Boyanich if you able to contribute to the spread of food for the day.
