Former NRL player Kane Evans has come out as gay in a powerful interview where he opened up on his battle with drug and alcohol addiction
The 34 year old life had spiralled since returning to Australia after an early release from Hull due to alcohol issues.
Evans opened a Cafe which closed soon after leaving him in 50k of debt and eventually homeless, sleeping rough in parks using drugs and alcohol to numb the situation
The most startling part of Evans story is how he really just wanted to die rather than face the shame of revealing his truth. Evans even faced blackmail multiple times throughout his career with threats to reveal his sexuality
“I had three goals in life. To play NRL, to buy my parents a house, and then I wanted to top myself,” Evans said.
RLPA Past Players & Transition Manager Joe Galuvao reached out to Evans for a catch up which paved the way for him to enter Rehab. His former coach at the Roosters Trent Robinson garnered the clubs support to pay for Mental Health services, with Robinson even going into his own pocked to cover a months rent.
The good news is, Kane is currently 130 days sober.
