The Beverley Heroic

The Beverley Heroic Spring has sprung and, after a very soggy winter, the inner wheatbelt is at its fecund best.

Thanks for riding today!

We had 25 people at the 7am start, and looking at Strava, a couple of latecomers as well.

Congratulations everyone for nailing another BH; the weather was en point, probably the best it's ever been since this event kicked off in 2014. Likewise the road surfaces; recent grading, decent rain a week ago, and cool, cloudy conditions since really conspired to make the rough stuff pretty smooth.

Now, none of us indulged in karaoke at the Freemasons last night, so there's room for improvement there!

What bike to ride??

How about Joe Barron's Beverley to Perth 1953 winner - a Manxman, built in Nedlands?

Joe, on handicap, with a time of 4 hours 53 minutes 5 seconds, was the first ever rider to finish the Beverley in under 5 hours. Behind Joe, scratch man Jim Oliver staged one of the most memorable rides in West Australian and Australian cycling history finishing third in the record time of 4hr 19min 30secs.

Anyone else obsessively refreshing the long range forecast pages??

Once again it looks like we're going to have a picture perfect day;
• 10°C overnight minimum
• tailwind at the start
• crosswind for the return
• 23°C max

Beverley and York recorded about 6mm of rain today (Sunday 5th). Nothing major but given the reasonably cool temps forecast this week it's possible that there will be a bit of residual moisture on the gravel. Sandgate, here we come!

Friend of the ride 'Angus Duck' keeps a close eye on riding conditions in the inner wheatbelt. He's just been for a spin around much of the 55 mile route, and kindly sent a course report (and photos to back up his assertions of natural beauty!). Regular Heroic riders will no doubt recognise some of the twists and turns, not to mention the absence of motor vehicles!

"Monday 22nd September, 20 days before the 2025 Beverley Heroic I rode the "55 Miler with Sandgate" course to check the road conditions. It was a perfect day - light breeze and a warm 24 degrees. The farms were a patchwork quilt of bright yellow canola and dark green knee-high wheat, making the scenery even more stunning than usual.
All the bitumen roads were in great condition - no issues or problems anywhere.
The two gravel roads were also in great condition - both having been recently graded.
Ashworth Rd leading up and over the hill prior to The York Olive Oil Company was flat, smooth and almost devoid of gravel (rated 5/5), the little section after the Olive Oil Coy had a few small corrugations and holes but these were easily avoided (rated 4/5).
Sandgate Rd was flat, smooth and very fast - probably the best condition I have ever seen it! (rated 5/5).
Although I was riding a gravel bike with 42mm gravel tyres at 35psi - I would be confident riding both gravel roads on a road bike with 28mm slick tyres.
Only 20 days out - the roads are perfect!
I hope everyone enjoys the day...."

12/08/2025

A group of Wheatbelt shires are proposing to build an off-road trail which they say would form part of the longest continuous trail loop in the country.

The proposed 105-kilometre cycling and walking trail would connect the towns of Beverley, Brookton, Pingelly, Popanyinning, Cuballing and Narrogin.

It would also link up to the existing Munda Biddi Trail and the Bibbulmun Track, and a proposed trail from Narrogin to Williams.

Community consultation session will be held in Cuballing, Pingelly, Narrogin, Brookton and Beverley this week.

Thanks all for making the 2024 BH a delightful day out (who organised that fab weather btw?.)
It was great to see riders of all abilities taking on a challenge, and the variety of machines being put to the test was pretty awesome - kudos to to those who rode fixed and (much) older bikes.
Look forward to seeing you next year. In the meantime please share a pic or vid with us all.

If it's coffee you're chasing your best (only) bets are York and Northam, lots of options in each town. You can top up water bottles there too.

The coffee machine at the York Olive Oil Co. broke down a few years ago and Arnaud hasn't replaced it. He does do a great line in ice-cream though! York Olive Oil Co. is also the last opportunity to top up water bottles.

Angus has been out to York and ridden a recce that takes in the two gravel stretches of the 55 miler, here's his report;

"Today (Sunday) was perfect for riding gravel between York and Beverley, so I got an early start and rode a loop around some of my favourite roads, including two gravel roads used in next weekend's event. So here is my "road conditions report" for The Beverley Heroic to be held on Sunday, 13th October 2024 .
The 5km of gravel on Ashworth Road between Mokine Road and the Great Southern Hwy (Including past the York Olive Oil Company) is beautiful to ride! I was on 40mm gravel tyres at 40psi and hit speeds up to 57km/hr, but this is so smooth and trouble free it could be ridden on road bikes with slick tyres.
The 9.6km section of unsealed road which is Sandgate Rd was the best condition I have ever seen it. It has been graded, was smooth, trouble free and easy to ride (got to 53km/hr on this). There are sections of sand but it is hard, compacted and smooth. Just take care on the downhill corners and ride to your skill level.
The flowering canola has all gone, replaced by fields of wheat - but still beautiful to ride through.
At this stage the weather forecast for Sunday 13th looks perfect - 12-25 degrees with light NE winds (chance of shower late in the day).
See you in Beverley!"
