Angus has been out to York and ridden a recce that takes in the two gravel stretches of the 55 miler, here's his report;
"Today (Sunday) was perfect for riding gravel between York and Beverley, so I got an early start and rode a loop around some of my favourite roads, including two gravel roads used in next weekend's event. So here is my "road conditions report" for The Beverley Heroic to be held on Sunday, 13th October 2024 .
The 5km of gravel on Ashworth Road between Mokine Road and the Great Southern Hwy (Including past the York Olive Oil Company) is beautiful to ride! I was on 40mm gravel tyres at 40psi and hit speeds up to 57km/hr, but this is so smooth and trouble free it could be ridden on road bikes with slick tyres.
The 9.6km section of unsealed road which is Sandgate Rd was the best condition I have ever seen it. It has been graded, was smooth, trouble free and easy to ride (got to 53km/hr on this). There are sections of sand but it is hard, compacted and smooth. Just take care on the downhill corners and ride to your skill level.
The flowering canola has all gone, replaced by fields of wheat - but still beautiful to ride through.
At this stage the weather forecast for Sunday 13th looks perfect - 12-25 degrees with light NE winds (chance of shower late in the day).
See you in Beverley!"
