👧 Why do girls stop playing sport, and what can clubs do about it?

Due to high demand of the workshop, the Game On, Girls: Why Girls Drop Out webinar is giving more clubs the chance to hear from Monica Beazley and explore practical ways to help girls feel welcome, connected and supported in sport.

Whether you're a coach, volunteer, administrator or committee member, you'll come away with ideas to help create an environment where girls can thrive as players, leaders and lifelong participants.

Shall I use a dampener or not, especially when I am beginning tennis?

My answer is 100% yes, for several reasons. Number one, of course, it reduces the vibrations. We know many tennis players have tendonitis because of the vibration; it can be the wrist, the elbow, or the shoulder.

The second thing is that it also increases control, which is very necessary in our sport. The third thing is the sound. When you hit the ball with a dampener, the sound is louder, and it makes you feel you are hitting the ball differently, and I think better. So I think it brings a lot of joy hitting the ball with a dampener compared to hitting the ball without a dampener.

This one is the result of thousands of hours of testing and learning, and I think one of the keys with this one is that it reduces the vibrations even more, but you also get the same feel.

Do you play with a dampener or without one, and why?

A Century of Tennis

For one hundred years we’ve served with pride,
With friends and family by our side.
From wooden racquets dressed in white,
To today’s fast game played with delight.

Now it’s time to celebrate,
This special club and milestone date.
Join us as we honour all,
Who’ve answered tennis’ timeless call.

Help us bring our history alive,
And keep our treasured memories thriving.
We’re seeking photos from years gone by,
Of matches played and spirits high.

Old racquets, trophies, badges too,
Vintage outfits worn by you.
Any memorabilia you can share,
Will help create a display with care.

So save the date and spread the word,
Let every tennis story be heard.
Celebrate 100 years with pride—
At York Lawn Tennis Club, where memories abide.
