HUGE TURNOUT FOR HARRO'S DAY
One of the biggest fields of the year turned out at Coolamatong Golf Club for the annual Harro’s Day, a charity day tribute to the late David Harrison.
In what were certainly testing golfing conditions, with a strong westerly wind and cold wind chill, only one player managed to break their handicap, with Mick Thoms shooting a superb 68 nett to win by six shots.
Playing off an 11 handicap, Thoms shot five over on his front nine and three over on his second nine to complete the winning score.
Commenting after the round, Mick said it was pleasing to have a good score on Harro’s Day, Harrison being a much-loved character of Coolamatong and the Australian snow industry.
Christie Barry placed second nett on a countback from Scott Frize, both players returning a nett 74, and Aaron Fenton won the junior prize with 77 nett.
In the non-member category, Will Lambert had the best score, much to his surprise, and Russ Haylock won the lucky draw prize.
The ball comp ran down to 76 nett for the members.
Near pins for the men were Scott Frize on 3, Geoff Murphy on 8 and Ewan Murdoch on 17.
Near pins for the ladies were Maureen Rupcic on 8 and Donna Tuckwell on 17.
The men’s longest drive on 18 was won by Jacob Ellis, with a huge, wind-assisted drive that finished 40 metres short of the green, and Carolyn Major won the ladies' longest drive.
Several lucky door prizes were drawn, including $100 dinner vouchers for Geoff Wilkinson and Brian Clayton at Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort’s Cuisine Restaurant.
Prior to the game, Sue Harrison welcomed everyone to the course, and sons Brock and Mitch both played, with Brock presenting prizes to the winners.
As part of the charity day fundraising for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation, respected doctor Cath Newman gave a speech on the effects of skin cancer on individuals and their families and highlighted the importance of ongoing skin cancer checks.
