Port Kembla Sailing Club was formed when a few good friends who had a passion for water and sailing began sailing together on Lake Illawarra. Through the following years friends with the same interests joined in to form the sailing club. The club Port Kembla Sailing Club was formed in 1950 as the Northcliffe

VJ and VS Sailing Club. It was later renamed the Lake Heights Amateur Sailing Club when the VJ and VS fleet declined and again in 1972 becoming the Port Kembla Sailing Club. There have been many successes at competition level with many state and national champions, in all classes, listed on the Club’s honour boards. But underlying these successes is the same passion for a good time on the water as was displayed by the founding members many years before. Benefits of Joining Port Kembla Sailing Club
The club has grown at its present location to a renowned sailing club offering quality racing to Yachting New South Wales guidelines and race rules. The racing is competitive and of a high standard. But for those people who are after a more laid-back approach, the club provides camaraderie and assistance to all skill levels. Social sailing is enjoyed by all sailors and the Trailable Yachties tell stories of weekends in natural settings and during regattas. Monohulls, as well as small and large cats, enjoy sailing at regattas at clubs around NSW as well as interstate, renewing friendships with sailors from other clubs

Learning to Sail
For those who have not sailed before, the club offers excellent junior and adult learn to sail programs. For first-timers juniors, the club provides boats known as Skyriders to teach children the basics of sailing in an informal positive style. As children progress through the four stages culminating in racing, the children are encouraged to improve and extend themselves to achieve their best in higher performance dinghies like O'pen Skiffs, Manly Juniors or Flying 11s. The club is aware of the well-being of all members and guests so safety is paramount at all times. For adults, tuition is provided on dinghies like the Laser or others. As competence improves, trainees may wish to purchase their own boat and advice is freely available on choice of boats to give you and your family the enjoyment you’re looking for. Members will help you acquire your boat to minimise the chances of buying a poor condition boat for the wrong price. The club is also a great place to buy good second hand boats and sails. Once you have the skills, racing in the afternoon will provide you with the opportunity to enhance those skills. If you are looking for a sport which can give competition, great friendships for you and your family and family holidays, come down on Saturday mornings to talk to those who have being enjoying the benefits of the club for many years. Consult the club website (www.pksc.com.au) for further information on learn to sail, the season calendar and more information about the club.

This weekend, we had the great pleasure and good fortune to welcome "home" former PKSC junior, coaching legend, Australian Sailing Coach of the Year and crowd favourite, Dante Olivieri, who conducted AS instructor course for the Discover Sailing staff of the club. It was a great opportunity for the old dogs to learn new tricks and the new(er) instructors to see how it's done.

When we kick off the sailing school next October, we'll have 8 fully qualified instructors to deliver the four courses for kids and adults.

Last night PKSC had the season 2025-26 presentation of sailing and special awards. In the juniors, Keira and Alice took out the pointscore, Cohen the club championship, Louie and Ciaran most improved and Charlie the junior sailor of the year. Old Man Emu took out the OTB Triangle Course honours for both. In the OTB Windward-Leeward, Ian won the CC, and Michael the pointscore. Jeff won both for the Cats (again).

Then came the Berkeley Bay Bummer award, won by Richard L**h. The detailed account Hugh provided of Magella (Richard's TY) dragging a crab pot around the lake only to have the rope wrap around the prop was a stand out winner.

The prestigious Club Member of the Year was awarded to Canteen Supervisor and Chief Hamburglar Annette. By the applause, a popular and worthy winner too.

In the special awards category, Norm Thomson was recognised for his many years of service to the club as 'Lake Legend 2026'. Norm's trophy is a mounted radio, symbolic of his role as base radio operator, safety coordinator and finisher.

In another special award, Jim Curry was presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in recognition of his contribution to the betterment of our club over, well, a lifetime. Hugh, our club captain, regaled us with an account of Jim's life and times, up to his retirement from active duty. We salute you.

But that wasn't all.

To round off a great year the presentation of life membership to two very worthy recipients was a pleasure to witness. Firstly our Club Captain, Hugh Lewis followed by Rebecca Curry were both surprised and delighted. Both have given many years of dedication and service to the club. They were joined by Brad and Hayden, our other two recent life members to pose with the updated life member board.

Thank you to all those who attended and contributed to the success of the club and we look forward to a bigger and better 2026-27.

Here's team Rugcutter (Castle 650) at Tin Can Bay SC, ready for the start of the Bay to Bay, this morning. PKSC has three entries this year, including Hatatai (Castle 650) and Magella (Magnum 8.5). Good luck lads.

So that's a wrap for season 2025-26. It was a bit of a strange one weather-wise, with more missed race days than usual. Our traditional end-of-season event was the around-the-lake race, and Saturday didn't disappoint. The breeze built to a steady 18 to 22kt SSE which made for some great rides. There's nothing quite like the send from Oak Flats to the club (around 7km) in one long starboard run. Saturday also saw the last on-water excursion of Gentleman Jim Curry, who has finally furled the flags on an illustrious career as sailor, president, and starter.

Despite the weather, the club has had a fantastic year with the growth of the learn-to-sail, both junior and adult, with the acquisition of RS Visions for the ALTS and OziOptis for the JLTS. The adult green fleet has expanded and the club gained Discover Sailing Centre status. We've seen the junior program expand with growth in skills and confidence throughout. A few of our ALTS graduates have stepped up and bought their own boats and are either green-fleeting or afternoon racing.

To finish the season properly, our presentation night at Berkeley Sports Club is on Saturday evening, 9th of May. Tickets are available on the website.

Next season we're hosting the Castle 650 TY Nationals in early November, followed by the signature regatta Sail Illawarra/Kembla Klassic over the last weekend in November. This year there will be a stand-alone Friday evening 'Dash 4 Cash' event which will have a unique format to be revealed later.

Thanks to Andrew McG for the photos from last Saturday.
